Abstract:
Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh, a member of John Wesley Powells second expedition down the Colorado River (1871-1873); author of the Romance of the Colorado River and A Canyon Voyage, and numerous other books.
Description:
Some of photographic contact sheets and prints from original negatives not included in Beinecke Library Digital Images Online.
Also included in the International Mission Photography Archive., Lessouto - l'Eglise de Leribe. ("Lessouto - the Church of Leribe.") A stone church stands on a rocky hillside next to a very large tree. A number of indigenous men and women congregate in front of and to the side of the building. A small cross stands at the peak of the roof., and The back of the postcard is blank and contains printed information about the publisher: "Societe des Missions Evangeliques - 102, Bld Arago (Paris)." The back also contains information about the printer: ""BRAUN & Cie, Imp. Mulhouse-Dornach."
“Congrégation de Saint-Joseph de Cluny. 2. ̶ Faravohitra. Jour de liesse ̶ La Paroisse en Promenade.” Parishioners are shown gathered near the shore of a river or lake during a walk. There is no handwriting on the back of the postcard.
“Mission de Kisantu. Congo. ̶ Procession.” Acolytes and a crucifer lead a large religious procession on a street past several buildings. People process behind a missionary father with banners and crosses. There is no handwriting on the back of the postcard.
"Ruins of Tien Gu Chao church, burned by Boxers about 1902." Stone walls are shown standing near trees after the church was burned during the rebellion.
“Eglise dévastée par le tremblement de terre de 1923, Japon. A church ruined by the earthquake in 1923, Japan." A missionary father is shown outside the remains of a church after an earthquake. “Missions-Etrangères de Paris, 128 rue du Bac.” is printed on the back of the postcard. There is no handwriting on the back.
The nave and dais of a mission church are depicted during a service. Two stained glass windows adorn the lower front wall. Several men sit on the dais at the side and worshipers are shown seated in open-back pews. The minister is seen at a raised pulpit.
