Title etched below image., With large manuscript lettering "Oh my mother, my mother" in ink above image; impression at the British Museum (registration no.: 1983,0305.31) has the same phrase written in the same place., "Argus" was an early pseudonym of Charles Williams; however, three other prints signed "Argus" from 1820 have been attributed in the British Museum catalogue to William Heath (as have others from this time period with S.W. Fores's address spelled "Picadilli" in imprint). "Folding frontispiece to "A Political Lecture on Heads, alias Blockheads!! A Characteristic Poem: . . .Drawn from Craniological Inspection, after the Manner of Doctors Gall and Spurzheim, of Vienna. By Don Juan Asmodeus. London. Printed for the Author, and Published by John Fairburn, 2, Broadway, Ludgate-Hill (Price One Shilling)." Ten half length caricature portraits arranged in two rows, and, except for the last two, in separate compartments, each illustrating a section of the verse-satire. The date is after Peterloo (16 August 1819), see British Museum Satires No. 13258, and before the King's death (29 Jan. 1820). [1] 'Derry-Down-Triangle', Castlereagh, with ass's ears, his head, adorned by a tiny gibbet, turned in profile to the left, holds up a scourge. On a scroll is the motto 'EIREN·GO·BRAY' (see British Museum Satires No. 13301). [2] 'State Jackal', Canning, directed to the left, holds a pistol in each hand. On his head is a triangle, bells hanging from its apex as from a fool's cap. Behind him is a package inscribed 'Lisbon 20.000 weight'. For his much-attacked mission to Lisbon see British Museum Satires No. 12872, for the duel with Castlereagh, British Museum Satires No. 11370, &c. [3] 'Quack Doctor' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 9849], Sidmouth, in profile to the left, holds a pike on which is speared a ball inscribed 'Circular Pills' [see British Museum Satires No. 13282, &c.]. On his head is a pestle and mortar inscribed 'Drugs for John Bull'. At his back is a large 'Bible' (like Liverpool he was an Evangelical). [4] 'Chancery Jack', the shoulders of Eldon, who scowls to the right, emerge from a 'Coal Tub' (as son of a Newcastle hoastman or coal-broker). He wears wig and gown, across his forehead is a bandage inscribed 'In Chancery'; from his mouth issues the word 'Equity'. [5] Liverpool, in profile to the left, spoons into his mouth liquid from a bowl of 'Water Gruel for the Poor' held in his left hand. On his head is a round tea-tray inscribed '£4.000'; on this are two cups and an urn inscribed 'Cordial Tea'. [6] 'Croaking-Frog--' Croker sits, pen in hand, in profile to the left; on his head is a frog. At his shoulder is a flag inscribed Dry . Rot . In . Navy' above two broken anchors. He says "Fal de Raltit," and before him is a paper: 'Talavira [sic] Algiers 2000'. He has an oddly shaped seat, resting his arm on a 'Quarterly Review', above a longer (curved) block inscribed 'Couriers'. (He was Secretary to the Admiralty, see British Museum Satires No. 12310, author of 'Talavera', a leading contributor to the 'Quarterly', and (with Arbuthnot) manager of the Press for the Ministry.) [7] 'Dunderass--' Lord Melville (First Lord of the Admiralty), in tartan, is in profile to the left, holding a pinch of snuff. Across his chest is a broad band: 'Pickings of Dad 60.000 [see British Museum Satires No. 10377, &c.] Place 10.000.' He wears a curious head-dress topped by a man-of-war surrounded by smoke. [8] 'Waterloo-Man--' Wellington, so styled by Hone, see British Museum Satires No. 13302, stands in profile to the left, wearing a cocked hat on which stands a cannon. He holds a dagger transfixing a bleeding heart; behind his back is a bundle inscribed 'Iquisition' [sic], across his chest is a placard: 'Coruption [sic] Prize . Money £60.000 Allowances £200.000 &c &c.' The text is a savage attack, e.g.: His soldiers 'sav'd the Spanish nation'; | Sav'd them--to send them to perdition | By 'Ferdinand's' crust [sic] 'Inquisition' [see British Museum Satires No. 13009] and (on Waterloo): The 'General' he'd not aught to do | But scenes of triumph to review [having lingered in Brussels]. For the campaign against pensions see British Museum Satires No. 12781, &c. [9 and 10] 'Chere-Amie', Lady Hertford in profile to the right, holds a sceptre and wears a crown-like coronet. She offers the Regent a large goblet of 'Noyau', saying, "Take another sup my Jewel. Grand-Lama--" The Regent leans back tipsily, his eyes almost closed. Abstract:
"The Queen and Alderman Wood head a procession through the City, all riding asses (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13918, &c.). They advance towards a group of Radical Reformers with placards who wave their hats. Notes below the design divided by vertical lines indicate the characters; these are centred by a description of the Queen, enclosed in an oval: 'Her most Gracious M.....y Columbine B--i, alias Mother Red Cap 2nd [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13975], Queen of all the Radicals, Whigs, Hoaxers &c B......i in all her looks and Brandy in her eye [see British Museum Satires No. 14175].' Wood is dressed as a jester in party-coloured clothes, red and yellow, here indicating the royal liveries used by the Queen; he takes the Queen's right hand; his right hand is on his breast, and he looks with eager anticipation at the Reformers. Behind him is the profile of Lady Ann Hamilton, who plays a fiddle; she wears a much-feathered (military) Scots cap. They are: 'Absolute Wisdom [see British Museum Satires No. 13899] alias Mathew Jackall Master of the Ceremonies--A rare specimen of disinterestedness--a keen eye for the Loaves & Fishes', and 'Lady Ann Bagpipe principal Scotch Fiddler [cf. British Museum Satires No. 14110, &c.] to her M.....y with an accompaniment of All round the Rad pole how we Flock.' The Queen wears a red cap with the décolletée over-dress with frilled trousers of British Museum Satires No. 14103, a large miniature of Bergami (see British Museum Satires No. 13858) hanging from her waist. She holds the tail of the ass which she bestrides with ungartered stocking, her shoe having fallen to the ground; on her saddle-cloth: 'B B Knight of St Columbine' [see British Museum Satires No. 14120]. A fat décolletée woman, also in a red cap, rides just behind her; she is Countess Oldi, Bergami's sister (who was with the Queen in London), described as 'Countess Patois Bourgois The Elegant & Accomplished Sister of Bart.....o The Fancy-Man.' On the Queen's left rides a thin young man, Wood's son, in quasi-dandy dress with red and yellow jacket, holding a banner inscribed 'All Majesty & Grace'; he registers alarm at a small barking dog which causes his ass to stop and kick. He is 'The Dandy Standard Bearer alias Young Absolute'. Just behind a youth, Willy Austin, rides, holding two children before him: 'Billy By-Blow of Black-heath [see British Museum Satires No. 12027] in charge of the Nursery.' Next him is a man wearing a braided coat or tunic and holding up a flag inscribed 'Innocence'. He is not described, and is perhaps Keppel Craven. Close behind him is a turbaned Moor or negro (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13929), in red and yellow. They are followed by two naval officers, one in civilian dress and wearing a Maltese cross. They hold a banner between them: 'Rights and Privileges.' They are 'Lieutt Humm'en [Hownam] 1st Champion & Knight of St Columbine' and 'Lieutt Flim Flam [Flinn] 2nd Champion & Knight of the Smelling Bottle'. The last ass in the procession is ridden by a naked Bacchus, a wine-bottle in each hand, and a half-draped Woman who puts an arm round his neck. They are: 'Two Proteges and Bosom Friends of her M.....y'. The procession continues, receding in perspective to the extreme right, as a dense crowd with bludgeons, banners, and staves supporting caps of Liberty. The banners are 'Anarchy', 'Riot' (both tricolour), 'Disaffection', 'Immorality', 'Indecency'. Description: 'A long Train of concomitant Blessings to add to the Peace, Comfort, Relief, and Happiness of that first rate Martyr Broad-shouldered and patient Bull.' The radicals face the procession in the foreground (left) and are more realistically drawn than the other figures. On the extreme left is Hunt, smartly dressed, but with a chain dangling from one wrist. He is 'The Hero of Spa and Peters Fields with a day rule from Ilchester'. Next him is Wilson: 'Sir Robert Lavalette [see British Museum Satires No. 12706, &c.] of Southwark KMT [sic] & MP'. Beside him is Hobhouse: 'Jack Cam Westminster's Darling' [see British Museum Satires No. 13501]. In front of Wilson is Sir Charles Wolseley, wearing a striped straight-jacket over fashionable dress, his arms (compulsorily) folded. He is 'The Legislatorial Attorney for Brummigum [see British Museum Satires No. 13251] with a day rule from St Lukes' [a lunatic asylum]. Behind him is Cobbett: 'William Tompaine [see British Museum Satires No. 13525] Cobt Weathercock' [see British Museum Satires No. 14032, &c.]. In front of him is Burdett (now with frontal baldness in place of the former prominent lock of hair), standing between Waddington, a ragged, dwarfish fellow holding up a placard inscribed 'Long Live Mother Red Cap', and Harrison, a man with chained wrists holding up a cap of Liberty on a staff. These three are: 'Sir Frank Demagogue Westminster's Jewel'; 'Little Wadd' [see British Museum Satires No. 14261]; 'Parson Har . . s . n Founder of the Sect of Radical Methodists, with a day rule from Durance Vile' [see British Museum Satires No. 13254]. The last also supports a tall pike which dominates the group, its head inscribed 'Rallying Point'; to this are tied a cap of Liberty and two banners: 'Revolution' (red) and 'Radical Reform' (blue); the shaft transfixes a wig (emblem of the Whigs). Hunt, Wilson, Cobbett, and Burdett wave white top-hats (emblem of Hunt and the radicals) with red favours; Wilson and Waddington wear similar hats. All wear large red disks on the left breast. From the crowd standing behind them emerge placards: [1] a Harlequin pattern inscribed 'Q Columbine for ever' [see British Museum Satires No. 14120]; [2] a wig, inscription: 'Q a handle to the Wig'; [3] 'Automaton for ever' [see British Museum Satires No. 14120]; [4] 'Poll Acre [polacca, see British Museum Satires No. 13818] for Ever'. All the banners of both contingents are topped with caps of Liberty, and other caps of Liberty are supported on staves. On the cobbles in the foreground a woman and a sailor sit drinking together, she holds out her arm towards the Queen. On the right ragged men run forward, cheering the Queen. The farther side of the route is lined with butchers shouting and making rough music with marrow-bones and cleavers, as at Westminster elections. Behind these a dense crowd of spectators is indicated. Behind are the houses and (shuttered) shops of 'Bridge Street'; cheering spectators lean from all the windows and watch from the roofs. Placards on two houses are: 'Adam and Eve', two nude figures, cf. British Museum Satires No. 14120, and 'Gill Tea Figs, &c.' This block is divided from the more distant houses by 'Cannon Row'. From the roofs of the latter buildings cannon are firing at three winged figures in the air; all three fall, wounded; they are 'Decency', 'Modesty', and 'Delicacy'. Abstract:
A satirical coat of arms, the supporters of which are a lion with the head of Queen Caroline (left) and a unicorn with the head of George IV (right). The crest is a crown, topped with a dog. The text above reads "The lioness and unicorn fighting for the crown," and within a banner at the bottom is the phrase "Dieu et mon droit." The shield at center contains four small scenes, labeled (clockwise) "Decapitation," "Martial Law," "Coronation," and "Reform"; the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" appears on a belt surrounding the circular shield. On the left edge of the design, a John Bull figure stands on a pedestal inscribed "Constitution" and holds a spear with a banner reading "Justice" at top; on the right edge, a soldier stands on a pedestal inscribed "Despotism" and carries a sword and firearm. A blindfolded figure of Justice, holding a sword and scales, sits in the lower left; the contrasting figure in the lower right is a fat demon holding a scourge and a snake, a bottle next to him

Abstract:
"An elaborate symbolical clock has a dial on which the hands are represented by the arms of the Queen, who kneels within it. Canning stands within the smaller disk of the pendulum. The dial and pendulum hang from a curved bar supported on two uprights, one (left) representing the forces of the Army and Navy, the Crown and the Church, and the other the Radicals and their pikes. A fat and carbuncled John Bull, much larger in scale than the other figures, and wearing a huge judge's wig, sits astride the dial where it is surmounted by a crown; he holds a paper: 'Chief justice Bull--Jurisdiction--ad Infinitum'. On the rim of the dial: (left) 'King', 'Lords', (right) 'Commons'. The Queen kneels in profile to the right, her left arm pointing to the crown, her right towards the 'Commons'. The supports of the dial are (left) a cornucopia filled with sovereigns, and (right) a giant cap of Liberty, shaped like the cornucopia, from which project the heads of men wearing bonnets-rouges. On the cornucopia are Liverpool, holding out the 'Green Bag', see British Museum Satires No. 13735, Eldon, Sidmouth with his clyster-pipe, and a fourth Minister. On the bonnet rouge stand four of the Queen's supporters, one (apparently Wood) holding out to her a cap of Liberty. A small scene is inset below the dial, flanked by cornucopia and cap of Liberty. The Green Bag lies on a table, across which Castlereagh (left) and Brougham (right), both wearing boxing-gloves, are fighting, the former on the defensive. Each has a second, Brougham's is a second barrister (? Denman). Below this appear seven vertical rods to which the disk of the pendulum is attached. The centre one is 'Unhappy Medium'. On the left, held by cross-bands inscribed 'Golden Argument' and 'Valuable ties', are 'Royal Sunshine', 'Sinecure', and 'Tangible etcetrias'. On the right, held by 'Magnanimity' [tricolour], are 'Quixotism', 'Public Champion', and 'Radical Celebrity'. Canning stands within the disk of the pendulum, both hands held up, looking in gloomy perplexity to the left. He hesitates between the contrasted lures of the pendulum bars. He is standing between a crown and a cap of Liberty. On the left a winged infant flies off with a money-bag, inscribed '1000', saying, "Adieu!" A similar infant (right) proffers a cap of Liberty, saying, "See here Glory waits thee." Above the disk: 'The Uncertainty of all Sublunary Honors'. The design is bordered, left and right, by the two supports of the beam. On the left a jovial sailor and a handsome soldier stand on a base formed of a 'Treasury Iron Chest'. The corresponding figures on the right are two ragged ruffians with linked arms, each holding a spiked bludgeon and a dagger, who stand on a similar chest: 'Pandora's Box'. Flags are draped above the heads of both: the Royal Arms and Union Jack with a crown (left), and a tricolour flag and a (piratical) black flag (right). Above these are (left) a mitre resting on a Bible, crossed swords, and bayonets, supporting a block on which is a crown.
