Caroline, wearing a chemise and high-strapped shoes, stands admiring herself in front of a full-length mirror. With her right hand she adjusts a feather in her elaborate headdress, which is adorned with the Prince of Wales's feathers on the far side and several pointed feathers on the near side, two of which resemble horns; her left hand rests on her hip. Bergami stands behind her in astonished delight, his hands raised in the air; a garment hangs from his left arm, and several towels or pieces of clothing marked with the initials "B B" are strewn on the floor. A man and a woman peer in on the scene from an adjoining room, the man with a pleased look on his face and the woman with one of surprise. On the wall behind Bergami hangs an oval mirror, the decorative frame of which includes a figure of Cupid standing atop a goat while shooting an arrow. A book with "History" on its spine lies on its side in the left foregraound; a burning candle in its holder sits upon the book

"On a grassy plateau projecting from a rocky mountain are Wellington, Peel, and an old woman, as doctor-accoucheur, apothecary, and nurse. Where mountain joins plateau there is a shallow cavity in which is a tiny mouse, 'Emancipation'. On the top of the mountain is a royal crown from which float the words: 'Its our Royal Will & pleasure to be delivered.' Wellington, in profile to the right, holds with silent concentration huge 'Ministerial Forceps'. The nurse sits on a low seat holding a spoon and a steaming bowl of 'Political Caudle'. A large open book against her knees, 'THE TIMES', and a large watch (indicating the clock device above the leading article) show that she personifies "The Times". She looks up at Wellington with bleary bonhomie, saying, 'Oh! the dear creature, how many will accompany it to Ireland, to spend thier money--no doubt Dublin will become more fashionable than Paris--now Doctor never mind the windy warfare of those Gentlemen above!' She refers to three "winds": heads issuing from clouds below the mountain-top, each inscribed 'Faction', which blow blasts towards the cavity where the mouse emerges. The centre and principal head is Eldon's; the one on the left says to the third: 'Blow away Wind-chelsea kill the Brat.' The third (Winchelsea) answers 'Aye, Aye, or Cripple it.' Howley) holds up a crozier to which is attached a little 'No Popery' flag; he bellows: 'Brethren, Brethren, Mother Church is in danger.' As a pendant to the bishops are two non-Anglican ministers. Beside him is a minister of lower status, with lank hair and a large 'Book of Faith' under his arm. He says: 'A beast of the bottomless Pit--a beast of the Seven Hills--a horned beast with fire and sword.' Facing him is a startled yokel who asks: 'Pray Sir what sort of a beast be it?' In the middle distance (left), behind the bishops, O'Connell, in wig and gown, stands on the side of the mountain, addressing a band of his followers just below him. "The Duke of Clarence, in admiral's uniform, stands with his back to the sea, gazing upwards and to the left with a malignant stare; his right fist is clenched; in his left hand he clutches papers docketed 'Calu[mnie]s'. He declaims (adapting Satan's address to the sun, 'Paradise Lost', iv, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13896, &c.): "O thou that with surpassing Glory shine, "And in whose train the stars attendant wait, Of thee I speak, but with no friendly Voice, And add thy name O Cinthia to tell thee How I hate thy brightness!!!" He apostrophizes the moon, a disk in the sky enclosing a bust portrait of the Queen, on a dark ground patterned with large five-pointed stars which are partly covered by cloud (hiding 'their diminished heads'). In the sea behind is a man-of-war in full sail, the 'Queen Caroline' (left), firing a stern-shot at the Duke; she flies a large flag on which are the Royal Arms, with the motto: 'Honi. soit qui mal y pense', and two pennants: 'Vox Populi' and 'Victoria'. A ship's boat, the 'True Blue' (right), is rowed by sailors; the helmsman stands up to wave his hat and shout towards the Duke's back "The Queen for Ever!!!" One asks: "Jack is that a Sailor!" Another answers: "Da--n me if I know there's no English true blue about him!" Abstract:
Broadside celebrating Fairlop Fair, held annually held on the first Friday in July. The broadside gives a short account of the origins of the fair, reproduces two songs sung by a Mr. Hemingway and a Mr. Lidard during the fair, and shows the festivities in an impressive woodcut which was printed from a woodblock fashioned from the celebrated Fairlop Oak. The Fairlop Oak was an impressive oak in the Hainault Forest near a lake at Fairlop Waters. In 1725 Daniel Day (d. 1767), a ship-builder, took some friends for a picnic there, repeating this for a number of summers until it gradually developed into a larger event, attended by ship, boat, and barge builders and their associated trades, though it was always held without a charter. By the early 19th century it was a well attended fair, known for its sometimes riotous behaviour. Day always made a point of arriving at the fair in a boat on wheels and this tradition continued. These impressive modes of transport, festooned with lights and sails, full of people in garish costumes making music and breaking into song were one of the features of the fair, and a well-known spectacle in the East End of London when they set off. By 1813 the Fairlop Oak had lost a great deal of its crown. The broadside here records its girth as being 36 feet. The tree was blown down in a gale in 1820, and its timber was used for a variety of celebratory furniture but also for the block from which the present woodcut was carved

The King wears coronation robes, his crown rises from his head. The Queen says with a commanding gesture: "That Cap becomes you not alone [sic] Off with the Bauble tread it under foot! ['Taming of the Shrew', V. ii] tis not the time for Pageantry & Waste, while thousands starve for Want? & while your Royal Mistress suffer [sic] Scorn, Reproach & Persecution, from the Dastard Hands of Secret Enemies." "On a skittle-ground just outside an inn (left) with the sign of the mitre, a stout parson stoops to throw a ball at a set of ninepins, smoking a long pipe. A farmer, seated close to him, with a foaming jug, says, with his pipe in his mouth, "I think a game of skittles must be healthy exercise Doctor!!" The parson: "Yes! I was advised to it by my Physician! I find great benefit! I get quite a dab at it--here goes the Head of the Church!" He has not seen a grossly fat and carbuncled bishop who has entered the enclosure, leaving a carriage and pair at the gate. The bishop says: "Proceed good Doctor with your Game--I wish you all the benefit from it which your Physician has promised, but I am afraid it will never procure you a Benefice."
