"Nicholas I, in uniform with plumed cocked hat, rides (right to left) a gigantic Russian eagle, his sword raised to slash. The eagle holds in one of its beaks a round wicker coop which it drops over a turkey crouching on a grassy slope (left). From each predatory beak a cloud issues, inscribed WAR in large elaborate letters. The heraldic bird is very much alive, one claw clutching a sceptre, the other an orb. The Tsar stands in his stirrups; his saddle is superimposed on the shield on the bird's breast on which is a mounted knight in armour with visor down and sword raised. To the shield are appended eagles and other emblems. Far below (right) is a snow-covered plain where tiny Cossacks gallop with levelled spears, chasing Turks, The sky is filled with flame and smoke from blazing buildings. On the left from among the smoke emerges the dark silhouette of a profile bust of Napoleon; he says: Europe look well to this beware of the Kelmuc [sic]."--British Museum online catalogue

"A procession from the open door of an inn (r.) towards the room destined for the traveller, a fat, ugly, elderly woman with a twisted, appraising profile, holding up a fan in her right. hand, from the little finger of which dangles a parasol; tucked under her left. arm is a lap-dog. She wears a riding habit; over her straw hat is a hood or scarf. After her shambles a lean elderly man, much caricatured, carrying an embroidery frame, bag, and box. Behind him is a man holding up a caged bird, to which he whistles grotesquely, while a cat ensconced in an alcove grabs at the cage. An immensely fat woman, holding a 'Bill of Fare', stands against the wall, watching the visitor. The fat host (l.), napkin in hand, ushers her towards the room, with pointing thumb; it is called 'the Ram', the adjacent door is placarded 'the Union'. Bell-wire meanders over the wall connected with bells belonging to the two rooms; both are jangling. Wellington in civilian dress stands between two fat bishops wearing mitres pulling each by an ear as they vomit huge streams of gold coins into a large wooden tub that is labeled: Receptacle for the poor curates, repairs of churches, and support of paupers. A spout from the tub funnels coins into a smaller tub from which a man shovels coins into money bags which are labelled: For curates, Repairs of Churches, Support of Paupers. Two thin curates walk away with bags labelled 'Poor curates' as one says, "Thanks to the Powers that has relieved our Wants." From the cherub's horn blow the words: "See the conquering hero comes."
