"Probably based on G. Cruikshank's 'Boney's Meditations . . .', British Museum Satires No. 12593 (1815), an adaptation of Gillray's 'Gloria Mundi', British Museum Satires No. 6012. The place of Napoleon is taken by George IV (right) who stands on the globe, staggering back from the rays of the sun which contains (in place of his own head) a bust portrait of the Queen (left). He repeats a parody of Milton's lines from 'Paradise Lost': "--To Thee, To Thee, I call!!! but with no friendly Voice & add thy Name oh Queen!! To tell thee how I hate those beams that bring to my Rememberance from what state I'm fallen." On the globe is a map with lines of latitude and longitude; the King's left foot is on a frontier between 'England' and 'Hanover' (towards which he staggers), as if to suggest that he will retire to Germany, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13974. A cherub flies above the Queen holding up a ribbon inscribed 'Innocent', and frowning down at the King. "A halt for refreshment in the Egyptian desert. The Princess sits on Bergami's knee, her arm round his shoulder, while he caresses her lasciviously. They sit with their back to an ass which brays: "Oh Tempora!!" She is very décolletée and wears trousers, and a feathered cap. A large miniature of Bergami, see British Museum Satires No. 13858, dangles from her neck. Beside them on the ground is a basket of bottles, and overturned spirit-bottle and glass. A small boy, Willy Austin, stands staring at the pair, and blowing soap-bubbles. On the left, but disregarded, is Mahomet (see British Museum Satires No. 14119) performing a dance with flexed knees; he holds up a crescent and a piece of drapery, looking towards the pair to say: "in his signis Vincetes!!," parodying the words of Constantine's vision of the Cross. "Napoleon, pushing an officer before him through a pillared doorway, looks back to speak to a monk and a sansculotte, shackled together, who drag a car in which is an imperial crown. They hold a large scroll inscribed: 'Most religious Sovereign - the benefactor of the church - the patron of liberty - the scourge of tyrants, and the defender of our most holy religion; may you long fill the Imperial Chair, and diffuse over a free and happy people all the blessings of your auspicious government.' Demons fly round a tricolour flag which floats from the car. Napoleon holds out a scroll headed: 'Address, &c. &c. &c. The Legions of France congratu - ', saying, "This token of your gratitude, my dear subjects will ever stimulate me to protect your liberties - to promote your happiness - and to preserve my empire from the ravages of war, tyranny and oppression." The officer, with a cynical smile, says: "Patron of Liberty - Defender of our most holy Religion - free and happy People - Ha! ha! ha! - What may we not expect? - Has he not got them under excellent subjection?" On the left is Napoleon's 'Secret Chamber': a table is covered with maps and plans; a large map, partly unrolled, shows Europe from '[En]gland to [Tur]key', including the 'Black Sea'; another map shows 'Suez' and the 'Red Sea'. A demon under the table holds up a large pile of papers: 'Plans against England'; on the floor are similar piles: 'Religion' and 'Treaties'. There are also 'Plans against Germany and Turkey', and a paper: 'Mem. the chance of the conquest of England is worth the sacrifice of one third of the people of France. Item. As Charlemaine not only conquered Italy, but the whole of Germany, and left the Imperial dignity hereditary in the Sovereigns of France, it is indispensably necessary to obtain possession of Germany, in order to support the dignity of the Gallic empire.' On the wall are three pictures: 'Sacking of Rome', 'Dissolution of the National Assembly' [see British Museum Satires No. 9426, &c], and 'View of Cairo' [see British Museum Satires No. 9358, &c.]. Below the design: 'Explanation. Majocc"; a hangman smoking a pipe awaits them at the top of a ladder, noose in hand. Three figures with bags over their heads are already hanging, with a fourth hanged figure being fed by a devil with a pitchfork into the flaming mouth of a demon on the right, a "Green Bag" falling into the flames next to him. Behind him is a vat "Filthy composition" into which flows "a pure stream to expose the secrets" which spills on a couple in an embrace, "How do you like it - non mi Ricordo." Passing an open door is Caroline, "The brewers wife." On the right are three men, one says, "Be just in all your dealings." Another, holding a pitcher labeled "a trial" says, "I can't swallow this, it is all froth." The third says, "I wonder at our commander engaging in such a business."
