Abstract:
On the coast of France outside a tavern on the coast of France a group of emaciated soldiers are preparing to sail for England. On the right a soldier roasts frogs over a fire on the blade of his sword; above a flag with the words "Vengence et le Bon Bier et Bon Beuf de Angletére." In the center of the design, a monk tests the edge of an axe as he bends to over a horse-drawn sledge laden with instruments of torture, a statue of St. Antony, and a plan for a monastery at Blackfriars. In the distance on the left a line of soldiers are being forced on board a ship. Above them on the cliffs, women are seen ploughing a field. The sign above the tavern advertises Soup meagre and identifies itself as "La Sabot Royal."

At his trial before Felix the Roman Governor of Judea, a very short St. Paul stands on a stool so as to be seen. The stool is steadied by a fat angel who is fast asleep and so unaware of the angry looking dog who wears a collar etched with the name 'Felix'. He stands addressing a gallery filled with people in Dutch dress. On the left behind a curtain the orator Tertullus tears up his speech; at his feet a demon pieces the fragments together. On the right Justice is shown as a fat woman who is not blind, one eye is not covered by the blindfold, in her left hand are the scales and in her left a butcher's knife. All the faces are caricatured; many of the audience hold their noses. In the distance can be seen boats on a river and a windmill

Another candlestick and broken wine-glass lie on the ground, together with the Prince's top-boots. He wears slippers and his stockings are ungartered, the 'honi soit qui mal y' [pense] ribbon hanging round his leg. Mrs. Fitzherbert, seated on the bed, draws on a stocking; her garter inscribed 'Fox' lies on the ground (cf. British Museum satire 7306). The bed is heavily draped with fringed curtains. "A scene in Carlton House. The Prince of Wales, seated in a chair, holds a stout, good-looking lady (Mrs. Sawbridge) across his knees and chastises her with upraised hand; she holds out her arms imploringly. Alderman Sawbridge (right) faces her in profile to the left, playing a fiddle and dancing; from his pocket hangs a piece of music inscribed 'The Reform', a new Motion. On the extreme left Lady Archer stands in profile to the right, holding a driving-whip, and pointing angrily at the injured lady. A little girl (Sawbridge) stands full-face, clasping her hands in horror at the treatment of her mother. Behind are a number of onlookers: a very fat lady in profile to the left is Miss Vanneck. Mrs. Fitzherbert watches, not displeased; Fox, his arm round her shoulder, gazes amorously at her. George Hanger stands in profile to the left. The other figures are less characterized but a profile head (right) resembles Lord Derby. On the wall (right) is part of a three quarter length portrait, the head cut off by the upper edge of the design, inscribed 'Sir G° Van-Ne[ck]'. Engraving of the 19-inch square-shaped tray, the center exquisitely chased in medallions, representing George I, on his throne, with the figures of Britannia and Justice, the royal arms, a view of the City of London, and allegorical devices, in a richly chased border and shell edge. The tray was created by Paul Jacques de Lamerie (Dutch goldsmith, 1688-1751) and engraved by William Hogarth (English painter and engraver, 1697-1764).

Batsford, 1935., Original silver salver in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London., "Whenever the Great Seal of England became obsolete, the silver matrix was converted by the holder into a grand piece of plate engraved with the design of the seal. The Walpole Salver was made by Paul de Lamerie in 1728/9 from the seal matrix rendered obsolete by the death of George I in the previous year.
