Autograph manuscript diary of the greater part of Baird's journey by stage, ship, and railroad from Serbin, Texas to Trinidad, Colorado Territory in June of 1867, which he notes on the title page is "affectionately dedicated to his beloved wife and children." Baird's route included New Orleans, Louisiana; Jackson, Mississippi; Memphis, Tennessee; Columbus, Kentucky; Cairo, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; and Kansas City, Junction City, and Salina, Kansas. He describes the scenery, weather, hotels, and individuals he meets along the route. His Confederate sympathies are reflected in bitter comments regarding the destruction of property by Union soldiers during the war and the freed slaves he enounters. He closes "volume first of my diary and narrative" in Salina, Kansas, and notes that he will complete the balance as soon as he can. The diary entries are followed by The Lord's Prayer, Psalm XXV, and notes regarding distances between points along the travel route.
Description:
Spruce M. Baird was born in Glasgow, Kentucky in 1814, and taught school there prior to moving to Texas before the Civil War. He practiced law in Nacogdoches, Texas, served as judge in Santa Fe County (in what became New Mexico), was Indian agent to the Navajos, and was appointed attorney general of New Mexico. Baird returned to Texas during the Civil War and served as a regiment commander in the Confederate army. In 1867 he moved to Trinidad, Colorado where he opened a law office. He died at Cimarron, New Mexico in 1872. He was married in 1848 to Emmacetta Bowdry of Kentucky and was the father of Andrew Bowdry Baird.

Holograph diary written by a young Irish woman during her stay at Bath in the fall and winter of 1796-97. She describes visits to the Pump Room and the New Room; concerts at the Harmonic Society, balls, walks on the Promenade and drives in the countryside; flirtations, suitors and gossip; and sightings of celebrities, including Mrs. Fitzherbert, the Prince of Wurtemburg, and Lady Sydney. Second volume contains a transcription of the first made by Walter C. Pepys in 1906.

Sarah Davis's diary records her 1850 trip across the plains with her husband. Entries describe the scenery and trail conditions. Several pages of notes by her husband at the front of the diary indicate he had traveled to California once before in 1849. The journal is accompanied by three photographs of Sarah Davis.

Juan Pantoja y Arriaga, second mate of the frigate la Princesa, one of two ships (the other, la Favorita)on a voyage headed by Ignacio Arteaga to discover a Northwest passage north of San Francisco in 1779. La Princesa was commanded by Juan Francis de la Bodega y Cuadra., Purchased from F. Perez de Velasco by Hiram Bingham in October 1922. Manuscript field journal that documents the military career of Bennett A. Clements, July 27, 1859, to January 4, 1886. The volume principally discusses the daily activities of Clements and the United States Army troops commanded by Colonel Edward Richard Sprigg Canby in Utah and New Mexico Territories from 1860 to 1862 . Activities included protecting settlers against American Indians and negotiating with Navajo, Ute, and Zuni Indians, and fighting with Confederate States Army troops. Later journal entries include details of Clements' subsequent service with the Army of the Potomac and at hospitals in New York City, and as a medical doctor with United States Army troops commanded by General George Crook in the Dakota Territory in 1876. The journal also documents events and trips taken by his immediate family.
Description:
Bennett Augustine Clements (1831-1886) was a surgeon in the United States Army. In 1856, he earned a commission as an assistant surgeon in the Regular Army Medical Staff Infantry Regiment. From 1856 to 1863, he served in Florida, Texas, Utah, and New Mexico. In 1863, he became a full surgeon with the rank of major and administered hospitals during the American Civil War. In 1876, Clements served in the Indian Wars in the Dakota Territory. In 1871, he married Mary Isabella Rutherford Clements (born 1844), and they had two daughters, Lucille Rutherford Clements Arnold (1872-1952) and Maude Hamilton Clements (1874-1944). He died at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas., In English., and Purchased from William Reese Company on the William Robertson Coe Fund No. 3, 2010.
