The manuscript describes an 1789 Spanish expedition to the Northwest coast to determine the extent of Russian settlement and trade, as well as the activities of other nations in the region. Meetings with captains James Colnett, Robet Gray, William Douglas, and John Kendrick, and the seizure of the British ships Argonaut and Princess Royal, and the Portuguese ship Iphigenia, are recorded. The work also includes a vocabulary of the Nootka language and a description of the Nookta region and Indians.

Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, of a diary documenting the author's travels and social activities in England and Holland, naming the aquaintances with whom he visited and dined. In England, he "dined at Chelsea with Lady Percivales sisters, children, etc. At 5, went to the Play." In Antwerp, he notes churches, organs, and collections of paintings and miniatures; in Brussels, he played tennis, attended a harpsichord performance, fenced, and went to see his friend's "best horses."

Abstract:
Diary, 1863 Jan 1-Dec 31, contains brief entries describing White's service as a corporal in the 20th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers, beginning after the 20th Regiment's participation in the Battle of Prairie Grove in 1862 Dec. White went to Patch Grove on recruiting service, Jan-Apr, and then returned to Camp Lake Spring, at Rolla Missouri. His regiment went to Vicksburg, Mississippi, in June, and he describes the siege and surrender of the city and subsequent movements of his regiment in Mississippi and Louisiana. In October his regiment went by steamer from New Orleans to Texas, remaining at Fort Brown near Brownsville through December. Entries are followed by his thoughts on his experiences in 1863, a list of soldiers with companies and tent numbers, and brief accounts and notes. This diary is written in a printed pocket diary published by James M. Crawford, Saint Louis, Missouri. and Part of: Two holograph manuscript pocket diaries kept by John G. White while living in rural Wisconsin and during his service in the United States Army in the Civil War. The first diary, 1859 Nov 25-1860 May [19], contains brief entries in which White describes farm work and social life in Mount Hope and Patch Grove, Grant County, Wisconsin.

Madame du Deffand's diary, written in the hand of Jean-Francois Wiart, she having lost her sight in 1754, for the last months from July 1779 to September 1780 in which she records details of her dinner engagements with her circle of friends, the entries ending less than two weeks before her death on September 23. She also makes note of who she has corresponded with that day and records details of interest to her about 01the news contained in the letters she receives or events of the day

Marie Anne de Vichy Chamrond, marquise du Deffand (1697-1780), was married at 21 to her kinsman, Jean Baptiste de la Lande, marquis du Deffand. The marriage resulted in a separation as early as 1722. However, her intelligence, cynicism, and wit gained her such friends as Voltaire, Montesquieu, Fontenelle and Madame de Staal-Delaunay, the president Henault, and D'Alembert. The principal friendships of her later years were with the duchesse de Choiseul and with Horace Walpole.
