Abstract:
"A young man leaning against a bank under a tree holds out in his right hand a square frame in which are displayed dead butterflies and moths. In his left hand is a butterfly net. His hat is a large butterfly; writhing caterpillars represent his curled hair. A butterfly rests on his left coat cuff. "Caricature portrait of a man in profile to the right. He is smiling and holds up in his left hand a coin with a head inscribed "OTHO EMP". In his right hand is a cane with a chased handle. He wears spectacles, a large flowing curled wig, an oddly-shaped cap decorated with a pair of horns like those worn on medieval women's head-dresses, an old-fashioned heavily-trimmed coat, a long brocade waistcoat and boots (which appear to date from the 17th century) with large spurs. His sword has a crescent-shaped hilt. Perhaps intended for Jeremiah Milles (1714-84), Dean of Exeter and president of the Society of Antiquaries 1768-84."--British Museum online catalogue
