"Three pedestrians are walking (right to left) into the teeth of a storm. In front is a very stout man with a globular figure, the lower part of his tightly buttoned coat blows backwards. He wears spurred top-boots, and his hands meet across his chest, holding a stick. He resembles caricatures of Captain Grose, see British Museum Satires Nos. 4683, 5511, 5787, 5802. The next man wears a cloak which streams behind him as does his wig; he has a laced coat and hat, with two large keys tied to his wrist. A lean man (right) puts his head down grimacing as he hastens along, his hair, queue, cravat, coat and breeches all blowing in the wind; his hands are clasped in front holding a stick which rests on his shoulder. Farther off, between the two foremost pedestrians, a man on horseback holds his nose, his bag-wig, cravat, and coat-tails blown by the wind. In front of him (left) a short man is crouching in the lee of a bush, his hat and wig have blown off, a paper flutters from his hand. A "find lady" presumably an anonym of the period, finds herself in the fastness of a spunging house; she is made as welcome as circumstances will permit; a bottle of wine, the refreshment customary, is ordered, and the stern hearts of the sheriff's men are appealed to, while bail is sent for. It was a well-known practice at the beginning of the century, and earlier, to pay some obscure individual a trifling fee to become security on emergencies. Similar fictitious householders were always in attendance, and producible from the bar-rooms in the neighborhood. In the present case a professional limb, of the Hebrew persuasion, is presented, decently made up for the occasion, to tender himself as bondsman for the lady's due appearance. It is evident, however, that a suspicious recognition is taking place; 'Harry Holdfast, Officer of the Four Counties,' or his deputy, does not, judging from his expression, seem to approve of the surety, and the Jew looks somewhat disconcerted under his inspection. The tears of the unfortunate captive, and the plausible reassurance--as to the respectability of the bail offered--of her chaperone, or duenna, are powerless to move the stoic breast of the experienced catchpole

"The instrumentalists are closely grouped round the armchair of the father of the family, a stout man in old-fashioned dress, who sits full face singing loudly, an open music book on his knees, his feet supported on the bar of his chair. His very fat wife sits beside him (right) blowing a trumpet to the grotesque inflation of cheek and neck. The eldest daughter (left) plays the double-bass; behind her stands a girl beating a tambourine. The younger children flank the design: a fat little girl (left) plays the triangle, looking up at her sister's tambourine. On the right a little boy sits at his mother's feet beating a large kettle-drum and shouting; he sits on two large volumes: 'Doctor Burneys Musical Travels [i.e., The Present State of Music in France and Italy ... 1771', and 'The Present State of Music in Germany . . . "Two women, seemingly courtesans, stand together by an arcade of the Piazza, Covent Garden, a place notorious for brothels. One stands full face her features, hair, and the hat which frames her hair like a halo are intended to suggest a sunflower. She holds up a small parasol with a hinged stick. The other, directed to the left, holds a closed parasol; she wears a cylindrical bonnet projecting over face and neck. Both wear clinging high-waisted dresses, with bare necks, short sleeves, long gloves, and trailing skirts. Behind is a man arranging pot-plants for sale in the market; where are also conifers. "An enormously fat lady flings up arms, legs, and tea-cup in terror, as her flimsy gown catches fire from a red-hot poker falling from the grate (left). She, a stiff military officer, and a young woman sit at a round tea-table. The man sits paralysed, alarmed and helpless, spilling his tea; the girl has added to the calamity by knocking over the tea-table so that urn and tea-pot spill their scalding contents, and crockery slides towards the floor. A loutish footman enters (right) but has stopped dead, dropping a dish of muffins. A frightened cat scampers from the hearth-rug. Over the chimney-piece is a picture of Vesuvius in eruption.
