"Diogenes stands in the House of Commons between the two front benches; both arms are thrown out towards Burdett with a dramatic gesture; in one hand is his lantern, illuminating the patriot at close range; small clouds at his feet indicate that he is a ghost. He turns his head to look steadily at three members on the front Ministerial bench (left), saying: "An Honest Man is the noblest work of God" [Pope, 'Essay on Man', quoted by Burns, cf. British Museum Satires No. 11562]. The three culprits (unrecognizable) register shame and terror, their hair standing on end. Burdett stands by the front bench (right) on which is his hat, displaying to the frightened Ministers (one intended for Perceval) a document headed 'Magna Charta--Pro Rege, lege, grege' [see British Museum Satires No. 11547]. Except for one member on the front bench, those behind Burdett stand, five being depicted, three of whom wave their hats. All the occupants of the gallery wave still more emphatically. In the background and on the left is the Speaker's Chair; the diminutive Abbot, author of the famous Warrant, see British Museum Satires No. 11545, &c., holds up a hand in astonished alarm. "The lady sits facing her reflection in a pier-glass. She wears a plain muslin gown with long sleeves and holds an open book: 'Delphine'. Her hair is cropped; the maid holds the brown wig with tight curls which she is about to place on her mistress's head. The dressing-table has been pushed to the left; the end remaining in view is covered with bottles of 'Honey Water', 'Eau de Cologne', 'Otto de Rose', and 'Esprit de . . .', &c. On a plain table beside the maid (right) are an open box labelled 'Ross's Elastic Wigs' [cf. No. 11597], a bottle of 'Huile Antique', two small combs, and a tiny hair-brush. The doors of the book-case are open showing volumes inscribed 'Tales of Wonder' [see No. 9932], 'Fashionable . . . Me . . .', 'Faublais' [two], 'Uncle Thoma[s]', 'Rosa Matilda'. The picture on the wall is 'Noon', a lady walking with an open parasol. In the foreground are an open coffer with a garment hanging from it, the lap-dog sleeping on a stool, an open music-book, 'Opera Dances', with pan-pipes. On a chair are a cloak and large cylindrical bonnet. Another table stands against the wall, heavy and ornate, supported on pilasters like a chimney-piece. "Marie Louise, a handsome and buxom young termagant, has seized the imperial crown and sceptre, and threatens Napoleon (left) who crouches behind the smaller of two Chairs of State on the seat of which is his tricorne hat. She looks towards him, one toe resting on the seat of the chair, the crown raised as if she was about to hurl it; she declaims: "By the Head of Jove, I hate him worse than Famine or Diseases, Perish his Family, let inveterate Hate Commence between our Houses from this Moment, And meeting never let them bloodless part." The sceptre she holds out above the head of Talleyrand (right) who has fallen on his back and raises his hands to protect his head, shouting, "Be gar she will give us all de finishing Stroke". He is unrecognizable except for his crutch and his lame leg with its surgical shoe. Across his breeches are the words 'I shall never rise again'. Napoleon exclaims distractedly: "Oh Tally Tally rise and rally". Behind is a tall ghost-like figure (? Louis XVI) clutching a sheet round his curiously drawn form, and shouting "Marblue--Vat a Crown Cracker she be". Behind the Empress is the 'Coronation Chair', surmounted by a battered crown from which flies off a cock inscribed 'Gallic Cock Roupee'. In the foreground lie heaped-up crowns, including two imperial crowns, a Papal tiara (cf. "In the centre of the design a double pillory is raised on a post, the feet of two victims resting on a beam inscribed 'Medical Board'. Both are confined at neck and wrists; a broad scroll inscribed 'Look Ass Peeps' [Lucas Pepys] hangs between them; one (left), in quasi-military dress, is evidently Thomas Keate, the Surgeon-General; the other, dressed as an old-fashioned physician, is Pepys. Below the pillory is a man on a braying ass, looking up triumphantly at its occupants; he is 'A Jacks-son', evidently Robert Jackson, M.D. In the foreground are four dead or dying soldiers (in neat and spotless uniform), 'Sent home for Inspection'; a man supports the head of one, another clutches a bundle inscribed '48 Regiment'. The flat grass on which they lie is flanked by medical stores, &c. On the left the gable-end of a rustic inn projects into the design with a sign on which is a goose [Chatham, see British Museum Satires Nos. 11549, 11564]; over the door is a placard: 'A Goose Cured here'. Beside it are a cask of 'Porter' and a large chest marked with a broad arrow and inscribed 'Medical Store[s] Inspectors Hospital Walcheren'; on this stand a basket of 'Surgeons Instruments' and a canister of 'Vitriol'; beside it is a canister inscribed 'Powder of Rotten Post'. Other stores are: bales of 'Cobwebs' and 'Oak Bark'; a cask inscribed 'Tincture of Arsenic Walcheren'; an open medicine-chest inscribed 'Candle Snuff & Cobwebs, charms for the Cure of Agues'; bottles of 'Gin'; a jar of 'James's Powder', and a bowl of 'Opium'. On the opposite side of the design are many closely stacked barrels, all inscribed 'TK' [Thomas Keate], of 'Port', 'Claret', and 'Burgundy', inscribed 'For the Hospital', 'For Home Consumption', and 'York Hospital'. "The interior of a large theatrical tent with a raised stage, flats, and a well-drawn and realistic background, and (apparently) a door giving on to the stage. A large, fierce tiger bursts through the flimsy canvas wall, the audience flee in wild confusion or fall to the ground, three men add to the confusion by carrying off sturdy women. On the stage a warrior with a drawn sword staggers back in terror; a shield with a Gorgon's head has fallen from the stage.
