"A young man in civilian dress, Battier, and two officers of the Tenth Hussars, are having their shaved heads inspected by six grotesque practitioners of phrenology, two to each. On the wall, besides pendent skulls, is a placard : Craniums examined and fitness developed.-- 1. Penetration--2. Folly--3. Insolence--4. Conceit--5- Benevolence--6. Ideality--7. Civility--8. Self Love 9. Brutality 10. Pride with Ignorance! Battier is identified by a paper at his feet, To Co . Bat**; he has a head of ideal shape; one expert says to the other: No, wont do for the 10th to omuch of No. 1-- 5 and 7--. One officer (left) sits in back view, he has a grotesquely misshapen head with lateral protuberances; the inspecting expert says to his colleague: No. 9 Conspicuously. The other (right) sits in profile; he is without a forehead, with an absurdly extended back to his head. One phrenologist, smelling his cane, says: No 3 and 4 very clear. The other adds: Heres the 10th the 10th the 10 to a demonstration."--British Museum online catalogue

"A drawing-room scene. A dwarfish hunchback holding out a book approaches a tall elegant lady in evening dress, holding a closed fan, who looks over her shoulder to answer. Below: Pray Madam what is a Note of Interrogation? Tis a little Crooked thing that asks Questions. [Pope by tradition evoked this answer.]"--British Museum online catalogue

"Satire; at right, a thin man and his caped friend, guns in their hands, facing a robust military gentleman standing at centre, with four guns in his belt and a blunderbuss to hand; the three are much concerned at the appearance at left of a doctor with two saws and a large medical chest, a man carrying a coffin, and a gravedigger setting to his work; a man stands behind, balancing a box labelled 'razor blades and bullets' on his head."--British Museum online catalogue

"Three revellers sit at a small round table on which is a large punch-bowl, each holding a full glass. A fat man in an arm-chair (right), full-face, each gouty bandaged leg supported on a stool, his left hand bandaged, and wearing a dressing-gown, with jovially contorted features, declaims the first part of the title. His neighbour, a young woman with her hand clasping her waist, declaims the second part. A wretched invalid (left), with stick-like limbs, looking on the verge of the grave, repeats the last part. The words, inscribed in scrolls, form the only title. They are the words of an old catch which continues: 'And is by all agreed the very best of physic' A patterned carpet, and cast shadows on a plain wall, complete the design."--British Museum online catalogue, description of the print of which this is a copy
