Engraving of William Hogarth’s 1748 painting ‘O the Roast Beef of Old England’ (London, Tate Britain), which he had himself published as a print. The scene is set at the Gate of Calais (after the painting in the Tate Gallery) with a fat monk prodding a large sirloin of beef carried by a cook, on either side are two French soldiers, one of whom spills his bowl of thin soup as he gazes in amazement at the beef; on the left, three market women with crosses hanging from their necks admire a skate in a basket of fish; on the right, two ragged men carry a large pot of soup while another drinks from a bowl, and a Scottish soldier cowers beneath an archway; in the middle distance, to left, Hogarth himself is seen sketching at the moment when a soldier’s hand takes him by the shoulder; beyond, through the gate, is a religious procession

"The Regent, as Macheath, wearing military uniform and heavily shackled, stands between Mrs. Fitzherbert, who kneels at his feet (left) removing his leg-irons, and Lady Hertford (right), who stands beside him taking the fetters from his wrists (inscribed 'Restri[ctions]'), He sings "How happy could I be with either." Mrs. Fitzherbert, a long rosary dangling from her waist, says: "The Benediction of His Holiness light on the Defender of Our Faith." Lady Hertford, sultana-like in a jewelled turban, says: "You heard of the Row & the Rowly Powly Song before Our house the Other Night?!!" Behind and on the right Eldon stands full-face between Perceval and McMahon, who face each other in profile. Perceval, in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, and holding a brief-bag, says: "The Greys won't move without their own Coachman tho the Brewer [Whitbread] has offerd his black to do the dirty Work." Eldon, in a huge wig, holds the Purse of the Great Seal; he says: "We must hire Jobs for the Night Work but we are Pro' Rogued." McMahon, in military uniform, has a number of ribbons and stars hanging over his arm; he says: "These Garters & Ribbonds are all returned." On the wall are two pictures: George Hanger, bestriding his pony (as in No. 8889) with a burly bailiff seated behind him, rides in the direction of a sign-post, with a noose hanging from it, pointing 'To the Kings Bench'. This is 'George & his Hanger On, takeing a ride together to a Lodging in Surry'. The other is Sheridan as Bacchus, but dressed as Harlequin (cf. Division I, political and personal satires., and Manuscript annotation in pencil in lower margin identifies the figure as "Duke of Richmond".
"Pitt (caricatured), dressed as Rolla, addresses a group of chieftains (left); the ranks of the Peruvian army with erect spears watch from the background. Below the (printed) title is printed Rolla's patriotic speech from 'Pizarro', II. ii, beginning 'My brave Associates', 'and ... we serve a Monarch whom we love . . .' (see British Museum Satires No. 9436). He stands with both arms outstretched, head turned in profile to the left, pointing rhetorically across the sea to the Spaniards, whom Sheridan (in this speech) equates with French republicans, and who are here represented by the Foxites. The Peruvians wear feathered head-dresses and feather kilts in the manner of Red Indians, except Dundas, who wears tartan and feathered head-dress. Dundas (caricatured) sits on the ground holding bow and shield, and looking with cunning scepticism at Pitt; he is the only one of the ministerial group of five who can be identified, though others may be presumed to be Grenville, Portland, and Windham."--British Museum online catalogue and From the printed British Museum catalogue: "(Description and comment from M. Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', VII, 1942) The Foxites, who 'fight for power, for plunder and extended rule', and follow 'an Adventurer whom they fear', all wear or carry bonnets-rouges and have tricolour flags, one inscribed 'Libertas'. They are small comic figures headed by Fox, who urges them towards the water. The others (left to right) are Lauderdale with a flag, Derby with a shield, Bedford wearing a jockey cap, Erskine in wig and gown, Norfolk holding his Earl Marshal's staff, Tierney holding pistols (see BMSat 9218, &c), Burdett, and two unidentified figures. For Pizarro see BMSat 9396, &c. The scene is burlesqued and altered from the play, where it takes place in the Temple of the Sun. The patriotic speech of Rolla (cf. BMSat 9436) made the fortune of the play and was reprinted as a broadside or placard in 1803, see BMSat 9397."

"Four figures of ladies caricaturing the dress of the period. The upper pair face each other in profile, one with feathers in her much puffed-out hair, the other with a wide hat tied under her chin (a Werter hat, cf. BMSat 7054). Below, one (left) stands full-face, the other stands in profile to the left with her head in back view, showing the arrangement of her hair. The fashions satirized are the puffed-out breasts, see BMSat 7099, &c, the false 'derrières', see BMSat 6874, &c., hairdressing and large muffs, see BMSat 7244, &c.
