Abstract:
Drawings by John A. Fuller that document Sitka and other locations in Alaska, 1867, as well as a drawing of a lighthouse on Tatoosh Island, Washington, 1866-1867. Images of Sitka, Alaska, include overviews of the city and landscape, as well as several structures that include St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral, Sitka Lutheran Church, a hospital, a sawmill, and the residence of Colonel Jefferson Columbus Davis. Depictions of other places in Alaska include a fishing station fifteen miles south of Sitka and a Native American outpost on Wrangell Island.
Description:
John A. Fuller (1828-1909) was a miner, merchant, and politician, with mining and business interests in California and Alaska. He served as a postmaster and surveyor in Sitka from 1867 to circa 1870. He later became a city councilman and mayor of Napa, California. and Title devised by cataloger.

An album of seven pencil sketches, mounted with a neat ink borders. beginning with a title page, a view in a grove with trees and with two figures (one seated and pointing, the other with a portfolio under his arm) in conversation and a rock, the face of which is inscribed with the album title. The six drawings folllowing are romanticised topographical subjects including castles, gates, and ecclesiastical buildings, in ruins, enveloped in trees and foliage, from the vantage point of a river or allong the roadside

An album of amateur drawings, with scenes in Kent, East Sussex, Hertfordshire and Surrey. The artist, only identified with the initials 'S.G.L.', provides titles and dates for the majority of the drawings. The first group (thirteen in all) dated 1828 are views in Kent, Sussex, and Hertfordshire, including Leeds Castle, Hythe, Sandgate, Rye, Pevensey Castle, Tunbridge Wells, St. Albans, and Hatfield. The second, larger group of drawings are scenes in and round the village of Bletchingley (sometimes Bletchingly) in Surrey, depicting village life -- for example, the 'Church Yard', 'Parsonage', 'Farm Yard', landscapes with farm houses, country lanes, bridges, and people fishing, andc. -- and include both people and animals. Other views of places in the vicinity are scenes in Nutfield, London Road, Bletchingley from London Road, Rabbit Heath, et cetera All the drawings in or around Bletchingley (thirty-nine in total) are dated between August 14th and October 14th 1829. Several of the drawings are on blue paper and are highlighted with white chalk, conveying a nocturnal quality to the scene. A final group of ten undated, untitled drawings also depict rural scenes, presumably in southeastern England

Depicted are Newfoundland, “carrioles [sic] (carriages) of lower Canada”, “sledge of lower Canada”, “calash (carriage) of lower Canada”, Montmorency Falls on the Montmorency River, Church of Saint Ann, Saint Helen’s Island, “a pipe tomahak [sic]”, the home of Sir Jon Johnson, Fort Chambly, Chaudière Falls on the Ottawa River, the church and mills at Terrebonne, a canoe, Fort Saint Joseph, a dwelling house of the North West Company, Lake Huron, Fort William (a fur trading post of the North West Company), Lake Erie, the mountains near Lake Champlain, and Quebec City. Four illustrations are of unidentified individuals; one illustration is of three unidentified Indigenous people. Inscribed on the front endpaper: “Begun at Quebec, the 9th March 1808”.
