Abstract:
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of about 125 primarily lighthearted and satirical poems and songs. Most of the entries are on the subject of love, drinking, gossip, and the disappointments of marriage; many include pastoral scenes; and most of the songs make reference to the name of the tune to which they are to be sung. The volume contains: The vicar of Bray, a poem satirizing religious and political events from Charles II to George I; another poem "to the tune of King John" satirizing George I and such political figures as Charles Spencer, Earl Sunderland and James, Lord Stanhope; as well as several satirical songs on the Italian singers Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni, including one sung "to the tune of 'Oh London is a fine town."
