"A pretty young woman and a fashionably dressed man sing together seated on upright chairs. She (r.) plays the harp, her head thrown back to look over her shoulder at the music-book which he holds open: 'Duets de l'Amour'. On a round table which supports his elbow as he leans towards her is an open book: 'Ovid' [Art of Love]. She wears clinging draperies. Two cats gambol amorously on music-books on the ground. The elaborate décor of the room stresses the subject of the design. A large wall mirror (l.) hangs above a marble console which is supported on winged heads; a butterfly flies towards its own reflection. Chinese vases containing roses (twin flowers) flank a bowl in which gold-fish swim to meet each other. One vase only is fully visible; it is a scene of courtship. Below the console a heart-shaped vase, decorated with a Sphinx, stands on the floor. An oval picture elaborately framed hangs above the heads of the lovers: a Cupid fires a blunderbuss at two doves billing on a dove-cot. This is flanked by carvings of flowers with (l.) crossed torches (of Hymen) and (r.) the bow and arrows of Cupid. In the foreground (r.) is one corner of a console table supported by a grinning satyr with a cloven hoof; on it is a myrtle plant in an ornamental pot. The luxury of the room is shown by an arcaded wall with pilaster reflected in the mirror, and by a palm-tree pilaster (as in BMSat 10303)."--British Museum online catalogue.

"The left of the stage seen from the right with part of the orchestra in the foreground, and two stage-boxes on the left. The singer, a handsome young man of feminine appearance, bows, hands on heart, singing loudly. He wears quasi-Roman armour, with an enormous feathered helmet, a cloak, bare arms and legs, with cothurnes. In the centre of the lower box a stout man in regimentals yawns violently, looking disparagingly at the singer. A handsome lady next him turns her head towards the stage. Four other men in the box are amused or quizzical; one uses an ear-trumpet. In the upper box an elderly 'cit' grimaces with angry contempt; his wife yawns cavernously, as does a head in the background. "The Pope (left), on a small ass decked with trappings, faces John Bull, who stands as toll-keeper before a closed five-barred gate. From the other side of the gate a path leads to a country church on a hill, irradiated, and framed by the semicircular inscription: 'King - Church and Constitution'. The Pope, except that he wears a Papal crown instead of a mitre, resembles St. Patrick in caricature (where he often rides an ass). He is aquiline and bearded, holds a crosier, and wears a cope. His ass has blinkers, on which a satyr's mask is freely drawn. He leans towards John, saying, "Mr Bull, I have been to Paris - and seen all the fine sights there - I now want to have a peep at that little Church on the Hill - therefore let me pass the turnpike." John (right), a fat yokel, looks up at the Pope with a suspicious scowl, pointing over his shoulder at a large open book, 'Test Oath', which is on a book-rest attached to the gate-post. He says: "If you want to go through - pay the Toll, what the devil do you think I keep a turnpike gate for?" Behind the Pope stand four dissenting ministers anxiously watching the interview. Beside him stands a man dressed like a sailor with a basket of poultry and fish on his head, and a straw-covered flask in his hand. An area railing is also padlocked, but behind the railing is a handsome young officer on a ladder, helping a pretty girl out of the window. The old man wears old-fashioned dress with a tie-wig, and two coats, one worn like a cape with the sleeves empty. His crutched stick leans against the door. "The couple torment each other in the breakfast-room. A round table is drawn close to a blazing fire. The lady has left her seat to thump on the piano (l.), singing loudly, with her back to her husband, but turning her eyes towards him. He sits in the corner of a sofa, crouching away from her, his hand over his ear, food stuffed into his mouth, reading the 'Sporting Calendar'. The pages of her open music-book are headed 'Forte'. Her song is: 'Torture Fiery Rage \ Despair I cannot can not bear'. On the piano lies music: 'Separation a Finale for Two Voices with Accompaniment'; on the floor is 'The Wedding Ring - a Dirge'. She wears a becoming morning gown with cap, but has lost the slim grace of BMSat 10472, and her soft features have coarsened. Behind the piano a boisterous coarse-featured nurse hastens into the room holding a squalling infant, and flourishing a (watchman's) rattle. On the lady's chair is an open book, 'The Art of Tormenting', illustrated by a cat playing with a mouse. Her sunshade hangs from the back of the chair. On the breakfast-table are a large hissing urn, a tea-pot, a coffee-pot, &c., a bottle of 'Hollands' (beside the woman's place), and a (full) dish of muffins. The man's coffee-cup is full and steaming. He wears a dressing-gown with ungartered stockings and slippers. An air of dejection and ill-nature replaces his former good-humoured sprightliness. Under his feet lies a dog, 'Benedick', barking fiercely at an angry cat, poised on the back of the sofa. A square birdcage high on the wall is supported by branching antlers. In it two cockatoos screech angrily at each other, neglecting a nest of three young ones. Beside it (l.) is a bust of 'Hymen' with a broken nose, and (r.) a thermometer which has sunk almost to 'Freezing'. On the chimney-piece is a carved ornament: Cupid asleep under a weeping willow, his torch reversed, the arrows falling from his quiver. "A justice-room in an old-fashioned country house with uncurtained mullioned window (right), raftered roof from which hangs a wicker bird-cage, and a truckle-bed turned up against the wall (left). A smart officer measures the height of a small thin yokel in a smock, under the inspection of a fat old justice, a similar old man wearing spectacles and in uniform, and a clerk, all seated at a small table. In the doorway stands a fat and pompous constable holding a staff and keeping back a crowd of countrymen who wait their turn outside the door. "Five elderly, old-fashioned doctors stand in consultation in a row behind Napoleon (r.), who vomits, saying, "My Dear Doctors! those sacre Anglois have play'd the Devil vun [?] my constitution pray tell me what is the matter with me, I felt the first symptoms when I told Genl Macke I wanted ships, collonies & commerce - Oh! dear - Oh dear! I shall want more ships now; this is a cursed sensation - O I am very qualmish." He drops an 'Extraordinary Gazette 19 Sail of the Line taken by Ld Nelson'. He stands in profile to the right. with flexed knees. The doctor behind him pulls down his breeches and peers towards him; he says: "Begar me have found it out - your heart be in your breeches." The next doctor exclaims: "A desperate case"; the third says: "I recommend bleeding". The two on the extreme left. consult together; one says: "Irrecoverable".
