The eight ancient Welsh chairs line the wall at right; four stands line the opposite wall at left, which is punctuated with arched openings to the outside. Plant boxes, trees, and the lawn are visible through the arched openings. One of the two blue and white china flower pots is visible in an alcove at the far end of the room, and the side of the antique marble vase with Greek inscription can be seen in an alcove in the wall on the right. The interior of a coffee-house, the customers, with one exception, deeply interested and dismayed at the news in a 'Gazette Extraordinary'. On each side of the room is an oblong table flanked by wooden settees. Between the tables and in the center of the design three men stand, one of whom reads from a 'Gazette Extraordinary'. His two companions look at him with scowling attention; one, his hat under his arm, has both hands thrust deep into the pockets of his coat; the other holds his forehead, from which his wig has been pushed back. A dog gazes up at them. At the table on the left a man sits in full face gaping with dismay, his hands rest on the table grasping his knife and fork. Two men sit on opposite sides of the table on the right; one holds a glass in his left hand, while he looks up at the group with the newspaper. His vis-à-vis has turned sideways, his hands on his knees, with an expression of melancholy alarm. Behind him, one hand on the back of the settle, stands John Wilkes, conspicuous by his squint and his characteristic wig; he holds a glass of wine and frowns. Drawing of the interior of the Round Drawing Room at Strawberry Hill. An arched doorway is at center, the door open and the Gallery and some of its furnishings visible beyond. The back of the door is decorated with Gothic tracery; the corners of the doorway, as well as the ceiling above, have quatrefoils in their ornamentation. Two armchairs upholstered in floral fabric sit on either side of the door. The chair on the left sits next to Japan cabinet with two branched candlesticks and the basalt head of Jupiter Serapis (?) on top of it; a vase decorated with arms and the ring device of the Medici rests beneath it. The chair on the right sits next to a Japan coffer on a gilt frame, a vase of Florentine fayence beneath it. On the wall above the door hangs the portrait of Margaret Lemon. Further left on the wall a landscape painting is partially visible; the left half of Nicolo Poussin's painting The education of Jupiter can be seen hanging on the wall to the right.
