A graveyard lies behind the American missionary church in the east suburbs of Ningpo [Ningbo]. Notes on the sleeve of the photo album state that the missionaries Jenkins and Robertson were interred there. The Rev. Dean Goddard preached at this Church., Also included in the International Mission Photography Archive., and This photo is from the papers of Dean Goddard, who was an ABFMS missionary in Ningpo, Che-chiang, China from 1870-1903.
A detailed note describing the complex and its surroundings accompanied this photograph. The building on the hilltop is June Cottage. The rear of Morrison Cottage was situated to the right of where this photograph was taken. A stone workman's house is in the foreground. A Chinese laborer can be seen at the entrance. The entire site was cleared for construction over the course of 2000 days labor and was superintended by a Mr. Chen Ding. They had to quarry through solid rock to clear this landing. The site is approx. 800 ft. above sea level. June Cottage was used as a beacon for ships entering the nearby harbor.
