Abstract:
The collection consists of manuscript copies of several thousand individual English poems, dating from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. The majority of the items date from between 1650 and 1800.

This collection documents the establishment and early years of the Puget Mill Company, which manufactured lumber. The bulk of the papers are letters from Josiah Keller to his partner, Charles Foster. They discuss building plans, business development, ships and cargoes, and accounts. There are occasional mentions of Keller's personal affairs and one letter describes his voyage around Cape Horn in the schooner L. P. Foster. Two charts show Hood's Canal, the harbor, and location of the mill.

Description:
Capt. Josiah P. Keller, of East Machias, Maine, was a founder of the Puget Mill Company. He sailed on the Julius Pringle from San Francisco to Puget Sound where he chose Port Gamble as a site for the mill. Keller became superintendent of the mill and in 1853 moved his family to Port Gamble.

Abstract:
Three holograph notebooks containing diary entries relating to travel; barometrical recordings; and observations on the languages and customs of the Indians and the flora and fauna of Washington Territory and the Pacific Northwest written while Gibbs was working on the U.S. Army railroad survey and the survey of the International Boundary Commission. The first two notebooks contain a few miscellaneous drawings. The volumes are entitled "Indian Tribes 1853-1854," "No. II Journal & Notes, N.W.B.S. 1855-1858," and "Washington Territory Miscellaneous, Chiefly Natural History [ca. 1857]."

Volume one describes Olmsted's experiences as a passenger on the whaler North America during a voyage from New London, Connecticut, to Honolulu. Volume two continues his account of his stay in Honolulu and describes his return voyage, with several missionaries, to New York on the cargo vessel Flora. Accompanying volume two are six additional sheets written in holograph. The journal, revised and with new illustrations, was published as Incidents of a Whaling Voyage (New York: D. Appleton, 1841).
