- "Bishop Watson of Llandaff stands in profile to the right, his arms outstretched as if preaching. He stands under an archway formed by a retort, the furnace of which is behind him (left); the neck of the retort swells into a globe above his head, then bends downwards, its bulb resting on a table or pedestal (right). A bishop (Pretyman) sits in back view (left) facing the furnace. The retort contains (above the furnace) papers inscribed 'Treaty of Commerce between Great Britain and France', and also (in the bulb which Watson faces): 'Chemical Deductions' (impolitic prejudicial to the Manufacturers / My Vote against the Treaty.' In the central bulb above his head are small etchings of 'St Paul's' and 'Lincoln' [cathedrals]; between them is etched: 'Some fancy this Promotion odd / As not the handy-work of God / Though e'en the Bishops dissapointed / Must own it made by God's anointed. - Portrait after Reynolds (Mannings 1819/1821); standing three-quarter length to left and leaning his right elbow on table, his right hand to his cheek, eyes to front, wearing plain coat and waistcoat, lace collar and cuffs; published second state. The objects on the table are a print of the Roman eagle at Strawberry Hill, which Walpole considered 'one of the finest pieces of Greek sculpture in the world' (see Description of Strawberry Hill, Works, v. ii, p. 463), an ink pot and quill; a roll of manuscript, and three books

Andrew Rickard laid in v. 1., These manuscripts were all purchased by Horace Walpole in the sale of Sir Julius Caesar's manuscripts, Paterson, 14-16 December 1757. Sold variously at Strawberry Hill, as listed below. Sir Frederic Madden tried to get as many of the Caesar manuscripts as he could for the British Museum. His Diary (now in the Bodleian) tells the story, as quoted by Mr. Lewis in his third lecture. On May 6th Rodd brought him 'the two best volumes' of the Caesar manuscripts (apparently lots 152 and 154), for which in the settlement he paid £240; he added that they cost the booksellers (in the Ring) at the sale about £140: lot 152 was run up by Boone, but Madden noted that the low price for lot 154 (£31.10.0 for a collection worth 200 guineas) made up for the high price of lot 152., and Levant Company. Letter Books. Copies of letters to and from their agents, chiefly in Constantinople, 1632-1661. Manuscript. Three volumes, folio. Old vellum. Bookplate 1 in Volumes 2 and 3.
