- Abstract:
- Volume used by an unidentified land agent to survey land for purchase, circa 1906, within Recording District No. 9 and Recording District No. 13 of the United States Federal Court, Western District, of Indian Territory. These districts encompassed areas in Oklahoma including Okfuskee County and the Muscogee (Creek) Nation as well as Seminole County and the Seminole Nation, The bulk of the volume consists of blueprint maps and township and range forms. Blueprint maps printed by the L. N. Shepard & Co. of Reno, Oklahoma, reproduce township maps for Recording District No. 9 (T11N R7E-R13E, T12N R7E-R13E, T13N R7E-R13E, T14N R7E-R13E, and T15N R7E-R13E) and Recording District No. 13 (T5N R5E-R8E, T6N R5E-R11E, T7N R5E-R12E, T8N R5E-R11E, T9N R5E-R11E, T10N R5E-R11E, and T11N R5E-R8E). The maps are interleaved with township and range forms printed by the Phoenix Printing Company of Muskogee, Oklahoma. Inscriptions in pencil and ink on maps and forms document an area from T11N R7E through T13N R11E and T10N R8E through T10N R11E, Prefatory material includes a typescript table of abbreviations used to designate 18 types of land encompassing prairie, swamp, hilly, and mountainous terrains. A map shows the region covered by maps and forms in the volume related to an overall map of Recording Districts No. 7-10 and 12-13 as well as an area outlined in ink straddling Recording District No. 9 and Recording District No. 13. A page before Recording District No. 9 section of the volume includes a handwritten table in the Creek language that defines inscriptions used on the forms, and Prefatory material includes a newspaper clipping from the Muskogee Phoenix, May 15, 1906, quoting attorney Nathan Adams Gibson about land distribution to people allotted land in the Muscogee (Creek) Nation; a typescript guideline for purchasing land; and a typescript synopsis of inheritance laws of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and Indian Territory
