- Abstract:
- Sick and infirm patients on crutches and in wheelchairs ("Bath chairs") race down a grassy hill as spectators cheer them along. At the top of the hill, the start of the race is labeled "Cripples Corner" and represents The Crescent; the city of Bath is outlined in the distance and "Cripples and invalids rush down a hill below houses apparently representing The Crescent, and inscribed 'Cripples Corner'. The road traverses a rough grass slope to the river, beyond which are the houses of Bath (right). In the foreground an aged cripple has fallen headlong, losing hat, wig, and one crutch. Two old men, one in regimentals, hobble frantically on crutches, followed by a fat 'cit' also using crutches. In the middle distance, and lower down, three gouty old men are being trundled wheelbarrow-fashion in bath-chairs. Young women cheer on the competitors, one flourishing a riding-switch. - "A fat doctor is trundled down a hill in a wheelbarrow by a lean and amused countryman. His fat wife walks beside the barrow, holding his wig, hat, and stick, and angrily threatens him with her fist, while a dog runs in front. They have just left a thatched and gabled inn (left), with a sign, 'The Horns', and a placard over the door: 'Real Yorkshire Stingo Wines Cordials'. Jovial village notables sit outside the door, drinking and smoking; two, much amused, stand to watch the departure. - An obese man and a tall lean woman, symbolical figures of 'dropsy' and 'consumption', flirting outside a mausoleum; another couple promenade before a statue of Hercules in the background and "A grotesquely obese man (his hat placed under his plump knees) kneels at the feet of an ugly and bedizened woman, fantastically lean and tall. She holds up a fan, and looks down alluringly at her lover to whom she gives her left hand. They are in the circular portico of a 'Mausoleum' (right). In the background is an avenue and a statue of Hercules, towards which a fat woman and a lean parson of the Dr. Syntax type are walking arm-in-arm. The muscular Hercules is contrasted with the four other types of physique represented."--British Museum online catalogue

- "An aged and moribund woman (three-quarter length) sits in an arm-chair directed to the left. A doctor, stout, middle-aged, and sensual, holds her wrist, while putting his arm round a buxom young woman who leans on the back of the chair. They gaze into each other's eyes. On the table at the old woman's elbow are medicine phials, a bowl of 'Composing Draught', and a pill-box inscribed 'Opium'. - "Six pairs of persons converse, arranged in two rows, words etched above the head of the speaker. A plebeian-looking young man, fashionably dressed, and an elderly Scot sit facing each other. The former says: "You mun know Sir I have an idera [sic] of being made a member of Parlymint, so I wants to larn a little Horotry". The answer: "Depend upon it Mon while ye hae such a t'wang [sic] with you--you'l nere proo-noonce the angligh [sic] tongue as I do, wi awe purity". A dwarfish officer wearing an enormous cocked hat looks up at a corporal, saying, "As I am shortly to have a company--I want to know something about my Exercise". Corporal: "I'll soon set your eminence to rights in that respect, but I think your honor had better first take a little practice, as a Grenadier in the prussian service". A slim man in black bows to a clumsy fat parson, saying, "Sir as I am about to enter into Orders I wish to have a few lessons on the graces of the Pulpit". Answer: "Depend upon it I will make you perfect from the unfolding a white cambric, to the display of a diamond ring". A young man addresses an Irish barrister in wig and gown: "As I expect to be immediatly to be [sic] call'd to the Bar--I have waited on you Mr Sarjant O Brief, for a little instruction in the first rudiments of Law". Answer: "Upon my conscience Honey you could not come to a better parson I'll tache you to Bodder-em". ['Bother', an Anglo-Irish word meaning (inter alia) to confuse and to blarney or humbug. Cf. British Museum Satires No. 8141.] A yokel in top-boots and a London apothecary sit side by side. The former says: "You must know Sir I keeps a little Potticarys shop in our willage--but does not know how to make up the stuffs, I gives one thing for another, so hearing you be dead hands at Physic here in Lunon I be come to ax your advice". The answer: "Never fear I'll put you in the right way your patients shall never complain". A loutish countryman addresses an insinuating well-dressed man who holds a large volume: "Register for [Pla]ces: My Feather saw your Advartisement about pleaces--and has sent me up to you to provide for, as to my sen--I should like to be a Butcher has I always had a turn to somat genteel". The answer: "You have only a shilling to pay Sir, call again in a day or two and you may depend upon something in the genteel line that will suit you"."--British Museum online catalogue

- "In the centre of the design a double pillory is raised on a post, the feet of two victims resting on a beam inscribed 'Medical Board'. Both are confined at neck and wrists; a broad scroll inscribed 'Look Ass Peeps' [Lucas Pepys] hangs between them; one (left), in quasi-military dress, is evidently Thomas Keate, the Surgeon-General; the other, dressed as an old-fashioned physician, is Pepys. Below the pillory is a man on a braying ass, looking up triumphantly at its occupants; he is 'A Jacks-son', evidently Robert Jackson, M.D. In the foreground are four dead or dying soldiers (in neat and spotless uniform), 'Sent home for Inspection'; a man supports the head of one, another clutches a bundle inscribed '48 Regiment'. The flat grass on which they lie is flanked by medical stores, &c. On the left the gable-end of a rustic inn projects into the design with a sign on which is a goose [Chatham, see British Museum Satires Nos. 11549, 11564]; over the door is a placard: 'A Goose Cured here'. Beside it are a cask of 'Porter' and a large chest marked with a broad arrow and inscribed 'Medical Store[s] Inspectors Hospital Walcheren'; on this stand a basket of 'Surgeons Instruments' and a canister of 'Vitriol'; beside it is a canister inscribed 'Powder of Rotten Post'. Other stores are: bales of 'Cobwebs' and 'Oak Bark'; a cask inscribed 'Tincture of Arsenic Walcheren'; an open medicine-chest inscribed 'Candle Snuff & Cobwebs, charms for the Cure of Agues'; bottles of 'Gin'; a jar of 'James's Powder', and a bowl of 'Opium'. On the opposite side of the design are many closely stacked barrels, all inscribed 'TK' [Thomas Keate], of 'Port', 'Claret', and 'Burgundy', inscribed 'For the Hospital', 'For Home Consumption', and 'York Hospital'.
