"A man supposed to be dead arising from his coffin and surprising his wife (?). The coffin is placed on trestles next to a four-poster bed (the deathbed of a rich man?). The lid of the coffin bears an elaborate brass plaque inscribed "Mr Gripe departed this life Ague" (last word indistinct). Arising from out of the coffin, Mr. Gripe disturbs the woman who was reading a large book (presumably a business ledger). On the ground, a soup bowl, a bottle and a glass, suggesting that she had poisoned him."--Wellcome Library online catalogue, no. 533361i (a later state).

Print with an image at the top and two columns of letterpress below: A middle-aged man in a robe sits in an upholstered armchair, his gouty foot resting on a footstool, and a pained look on his face; medicine and a bowl on the table beside his chair (left) and a crutch rests against a second stool (right). He reaches toward a younger woman in a cap and apron who is looking down and away from him. On the left is bed with curtains and on the wall, a framed picture of Cupid shooting an arrow. The letterpress text below, in two columns, provides a timeline for a man's life, starting at the age of 16 listed at the beginning of each line, tells the humorous tale of the consequences of a man putting off marriage for prideful reasons from age "16 - incipient palpitations towards the young ladies", through the ages of "29 - rails against the fair sex", "37 - indulge in every kind of dissipation", and "48 - thinks living alone quite irksome ...". Eventually, he resolves to have a prudent young woman as housekeeper and companion, gradually feeling some attachment to her and becoming completely under her influence. At age 60, as he begins to feel ill, and "grows rapidly worse, has his will made in her favour, and makes an exit."

"Bedroom scene: an invalid in a dressing-gown sits smiling in an arm-chair, while a fat yawning doctor, 'Quiet', puts a night-cap on his head. On the right 'Merryman', dressed as a zany or clown, with a gridiron painted on the back of his striped tunic, kicks Death towards the door (right), and presses his cap like an extinguisher against its grinning skull; he says: "Be Off! Be Off! you have no chance where Diet Merryman and Quiet practice!" Death answers: "Then my first job must be to quiet you and your partners will soon follow." Quiet: "Come now for a little quiet; Merrymans dose has opperated suficiently!" The patient holds a 'merrythought'. A fat cook, 'Diet', stands on the left inspecting a dish of bare chicken bones; he says, grinning broadly: "He'll do! Pick'd the bones clean! We shall beat the Charlotte Street Medical Board hollow!" A dinner-table, with an empty plate, a decanter of 'Madiera' and a loaf, is on the left, and behind it a large canopied bed. The chimneypiece (right), is covered with medicine-bottles. The floor is boarded. On it lie two piles of 'Carricatures', evidently the 'Caricature Magazine', on which the imprint is inscribed. There are also books lettered 'Jests'.
