In a large square overlooked by a row of buildings, a central gallows is surrounded by large numbers of armed men in guard-like rows, behind whom crowds are massed. The hanging has already occurred; the two condemned men's bodies, with hoods over their heads, are suspended below the open trap door of the gallows

Title from caption below image., "Noisy Carier's Book & Stationery Co."--Lower right corner., and Joseph Hetherington and Philander Brace were each accused of murdering two men in two separate incidents, and were executed by the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance.

The second illustration, with caption "Mass meeting endorsing the acts of the Vigilance Committe June 14th" ("Committe" having dropped the final "e"), shows large crowds gathered in the streets of San Francisco
