Abstract:
Enos Christman's journals describe his 1849 sea voyage around the Horn from Philadelphia to San Francisco, his work in the gold fields and for the Sonora Herald. Pasted into the back of one journal are newspaper clippings of Christman's letters to Pennsylvania newspapers from his vacations in southern California, dated 1891-1896. There is correspondence between Christman and his fiancée Ellen A. Apple, his patron Henry S. Evans, his companion DeWitt Clinton Atkins, his friend Enos Prizer, and others.

Abstract:
Typescript carbon, corrected, transcript of letters and a document relating to the Lamberts' overland journey and John S. Lambert's stay in California in 1849-1851. There are four letters from John B. Lambert to his father describing his trip to New Orleans, and Texas by boat. This is followed by a letter from John B. Trask, the company's doctor, describing John B. Lambert's death, accompanied by a sworn statement declaring John B. Lambert's temperate and exemplary habits, signed by John B. Trask, J.W. Audubon, and Joseph Lambert. There are four letters from John S. Lambert to his wife Rachel describing his life in California, which includes a reference to the 1850 San Francisco fire.

Acquired with the Frederick W. & Carrie S. Beinecke Fund for Western Americana. and John S. Lambert and John B. Lambert of New Canaan, Connecticut, traveled to California in early 1849 with a company of men under Col. Henry L. Weed and John Woodhouse Audubon, John James Audubon's son. The Lamberts' relationship is unknown. They traveled the southern route to California, and at Rio Grande, Texas John B. Lambert was the first member of the company to die of cholera. John S. Lambert went on to California, where he mined and worked as an express courier through 1851.

The journal records an 1849 trip from Missouri, beginning on the ship Highland Mary to old Fort Kearney, overland by the Platte and Sweetwater, Fort Bridger, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, the southern trail, Virgin River, Cajon Pass, and Sacramento. Hamelin also records an 1856 trip from Leavenworth to Fort Laramie where he became an agent for Majors, Russell Co., freighters. He made the return journey in 1857. There are notes on his stays in Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and Fort Laramie. and Typed transcript completely digitized.

The Burnett Family Papers consist of diaries, memoirs, invitations, and miscellaneous printed material. The diary of Lester Burnett, the father of W. C. Burnett, chronicles his journey to San Francisco by way of Panama, and his early days there. The entries run from July 13, 1850 to January 8, 1851. The diary of W. C. Burnett also describes a voyage to San Francisco and his early days there. Entries run from April 20 to May 24, 1854. In addition, there is an undated typescript memoir by Jane Cleveland Burnett, W. C. Burnettt's wife, entitled, "My Memories of Early California Days." There are also two folders of invitations to events in the San Francisco area dating from 1851 to 1891.

Description of a voyage by the ships Princesa and San Carlos, commanded by Esteban José Martínez and Gonzalo Lopez de Maro, along theCalifornia coast to the Russian settlements. The report notes that the ships called at Santiago, Trinidad, and Unalaska, discovering that the Russians had established six settlements and were planning to colonize a port named Nootka in the following year. The document also speculates about problems the Russian port selltements pose for the Spanish.
