Two ALS dated at Columbia, California, written by Alvah I. Davis to "Wm. B." and "Dear Will," a friend in the East. A letter dated 1854 Nov 11 discusses his plans to return to the East from Oregon via California, his subsequent decision to remain in California following the wreck of the ship Yankee Blade during his passage from San Francisco, and his work as a miner near Columbia. A letter dated 1855 Jan 27-28 describes in detail his experiences during the wreck of the Yankee Blade and discusses his impressions of Columbia and his life as a miner. The letters are accompanied by typed transcripts.

Six autograph letters (1853-1856) from August Scharf and his wife to her parents in Hermann [Missouri?] written after their arrival in California. The letters discuss their ranch, August's work in the mines, trouble with Elisabeth's brothers, financial difficulties, and Elisabeth's death. One letter contains an addendum by August's friend Jakob Schneider and wife. The Scharf letters are accompanied by three autograph letters dated 1860-1863, one from Alwine Scharf Weber to her brother from Naumburg, Germany containing family news, another from Gottlob Sachse Shuhmacher to his friend August Scharf from Nebra, near Naumburg, asking for news of his brother-in-law, and a third from Charles Robert Kleine to [August?] Scharf from San Francisco mentioning that he had visited Scharf's little son.
Description:
August Scharf, his wife Elisabeth, and her three brothers made an overland journey to California in 1853 from Hermann (possibly Hermann, Missouri, a German settlement). The Scharfs lived in Grizzly Flat, where they had a farm and had shares in a gold mill. Elisabeth died in August 1856, two months after having a third child, their first girl. and Purchased from Charles Apfelbaum on the Arthur Corbitt Hoskins Memorial Fund, 2000.

Abstract:
Printed "Daily Journal for 1856," published by Francis & Loutrel, New York, containing an autograph manuscript diary written by an unidentified writer from Rockland, Maine, describing his experiences at sea and in California gold camps, 1853-1856, with a summary of his voyages as a sailor to ports in the United States and South America, 1851-1859. Brief diary entries concern his departure from Rockland; passage to San Francisco on the William T. Sayward; and experiences as a gold miner in Campo Seco and other locations in Calaveras County, California, and as a sailor on the west coast, 1854-1856. Also present are signatures of Elsie M. McIntosh, Rockland, Maine, 1873, and clippings of poems, notes and drawings, possibly by McIntosh.
