In the foreground (left) a party of ministers is carousing. Members of the Opposition watch them with indignation. In the distance (left) behind them mounted men with hounds chase a stag. On the right the Temple of Fame is being demolished by the enemies of Britain. Many of the figures have numbers referring to notes engraved beneath the design. The central figure in the ministerial group is (4) Sandwich ("S--h") seated on the ground playing a violin, between two courtesans, each of whom holds a goblet of wine. He turns to one of them, saying, "D--mn the Navy, Give me t'ther Glee"; she holds a torn paper inscribed "How merrily we live". An open book, "Catchs Glees", in front of him, is supported by a wine-bottle. In the left corner of the print is (5) North (“N--h”) seated on a small sack inscribed “Budg[et]”, he is yawning, his arms stretched above his head. Three men stand behind him: a man in Elizabethan dress wearing a tall hat and ruff who is (9) “R--by [Rigby] in the Character of Bobadil”. He says (apparently of Sandwich) “I would he were in the Bottomless Pit.” ... Behind him and whispering into his ear, stands 8, Lord Amherst (“A--rst”), very thin, saying, “Dick Rugby [sic] Stand Close”. Behind Amherst stands 7, Lord George Germain (“G--mn”) saying “Jeffry Barebones [i.e. Amherst], this is worse than Minden.” Next on the right stands the group of patriots: (6) Pitt (“W--P--t”) looking towards North, says “Shake off this Indolence”. (3), Fox (“F--x”), pointing towards the Temple of Fame (right) and frowning, says, “Wheres your Navy, wheres your Islands”. (2), Burke (“B--k”) is saying “Wont even Destruction move ye”. (1), The Duke of Richmond (“R--d”) says “Curs'd be those men who owe their Greatness to their Countrys Ruin”. In the foreground (right) Britannia, seated on the ground on her shield, weeps, a handkerchief held to her eyes. "A scene in Carlton House. The Prince of Wales, seated in a chair, holds a stout, good-looking lady (Mrs. Sawbridge) across his knees and chastises her with upraised hand; she holds out her arms imploringly. Alderman Sawbridge (right) faces her in profile to the left, playing a fiddle and dancing; from his pocket hangs a piece of music inscribed 'The Reform', a new Motion. On the extreme left Lady Archer stands in profile to the right, holding a driving-whip, and pointing angrily at the injured lady. A little girl (Sawbridge) stands full-face, clasping her hands in horror at the treatment of her mother. Behind are a number of onlookers: a very fat lady in profile to the left is Miss Vanneck. Mrs. Fitzherbert watches, not displeased; Fox, his arm round her shoulder, gazes amorously at her. George Hanger stands in profile to the left. The other figures are less characterized but a profile head (right) resembles Lord Derby. On the wall (right) is part of a three quarter length portrait, the head cut off by the upper edge of the design, inscribed 'Sir G° Van-Ne[ck]'. He refers to a skeleton suspended in a cupboard as the doctor's "messmate". and "Sailor and quack face each other in a consulting room. The sailor (left) has a clumsy bandage over forehead, one eye, and left cheek; he is dressed as in British Museum Satires No. 10894; under his arm is a cudgel, and in his hand a paper headed 'List of Cures'. Behind him (left) is an open cupboard containing a tall skeleton with goggling eye-sockets. With forefinger raised, warily pugnacious, he says: "You must know Doctor I have got a bit of a Confusion on my larboard cheek from a chance shot, and as I dont think it of consequence enough for our Ship's surgeon, I bore down to you, after overhauling a long list of your cures - but I suppose front the messmate in the Cabin there, you dont always make a return of the Killed and Wounded?" The doctor, in old-fashioned dress and wig, leans towards him with extended forefinger, saying, "Sir, my rule of practice is this, there is pen, ink, and paper, - sign a certificate of your cure, and I'll take you in hand immediately on paying down two Guineas!" Three American Indians are shown killing six loyalists as the result of the 1783 peace treaty preliminaries. On the left, an Indian pulling on the rope attached to the nooses of two military officers and two civilians hanged from a limb of a dead tree says, "I have them all in a String." The limb is inscribed, "Recommended to Congress by Lord S___e [Shelburne]." Below, another Indian with a large knife in his hand pulls the hair of a loyalist lying on the ground saying, "I'll scalp him." To their right, a loyalist kneeling on the ground and looking with horror over his shoulder at the Indian with a raised tomahawk says, "O Cruel Fate! is this the Return for Our Loyalty," to which the Indian responds, "I'll tomahawk the Dog."

"The Treasury tub" on a stand in the middle of the image, is fitted with a siphon signed "Premier," from which other pipes extend toward Charles Fox, with a fox's head, on the left, and Lord North on the right. Fox, with a sealed cask by his side and holding a jug, complains that the tub appears to be empty from frequent use by the two of them and their friends. North, pouring from a jug into the cask by his side, expresses his contentment with its fullness. The "National tub" under the stand remains empty and "Fox and North, as two cellarmen, are filling casks from "The Treasury Tub" which lies on a wooden stand in the centre of the design. A siphon inscribed "Premier" is inserted in the top of the cask, from which branch a number of curving pipes, or cocks; through these the cellarmen divert its contents to receptacles for their own use. The "National Tub" which stands under the tap of The "Treasury Tub" (or cask) is empty. Fox sits on the left in profile to the right, with a fox's head, curled wig, and long bushy queue, holding a jug on his knee and leaning forward; he says, "The cask sounds empty & well it might be my Lord for we & our Friends have long been drawing from it". The cocks which extend towards him from the siphon are inscribed, "C Fox's Cock, Cock Royal", and "This Cock for Private Services". A cask at his side, in allusion to his gambling habits, is inscribed, "For C. Fox to be left at the Rattle Box Hazard Row till called for". North (right), very stout, in profile to the left, leans backwards pouring liquor from a jug through a funnel into the mouth of his cask, which is inscribed, "For Mr Deputy Secretary to be left at the Vicar of Bray'[s] Head - Bushy Park", indicating that he is a turn-coat and a mere deputy to Fox. The pipes which extend towards him from the siphon are described "Lord No . . .h's Cock; Election Bribe & Pension Cock" and "Admiralty". His lips are pouted towards his own cock and he is saying (in the metre of the Vicar of Bray): "A Plenum in my Cask I shew, with Plus & Plus behind Sir; and now that Cask runs minus low A Vacuum some will find Sir.""--British Museum catalogue

"Satire on the popularity of the Beggar's Opera in the form of a medley print. At top left a print shows two oval portraits, Lavinia Fenton as Polly Peachum on the left and Thomas Walker as Macheath on the right, two short columns of verse beneath. In the centre lies a print depicting a debased Parnassus: in the foreground muses drink from a barrel, one vomiting; a woman wearing a hat hands a basket to a muse sitting in a dust-cart drawn by a Pegasus; a cornucopia lies upended on the ground: in the background, is a boxing match surrounded on two sides with a temporary stand from which flies the flag of St George and to the right of which a bull and a bear are preceded by Apollo playing a fiddle; beneath are four lines of verse describing the scene. Behind the Parnassus print another shows the ghost of Jeremy Collier rising from his grave holding the pamphlet in which he had condemned "The Immoratlities of the English Stage", four lines of verse beneath. This print is overlaid by a smaller oblong print with four verses and portraits of Caleb D'Anvers (Nicholas Amhurst) Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope and Lavinia Fenton (as Polly Peachum). On the left is a print in which Democritus and Heraclitus examine a globe together, eight lines of verse beneath. In the centre is an engraved address 'To Polly Peachum' quoted, according to the earlier state from The Daily Journal, April 19, 1728. At lower left is a print with a stage where a Apollo descends on a cloud to judge between rival singers (Faustina and Cuzzoni) to whom a group of gentlemen with asses' ears listen without judgement, two columns of verse beneath explain the scene. On the right, a scene by a river where a balance has been set up in which the Beggar's Opera outweighs Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Addison, Nicholas Rowe and Thomas Otway; the personification of trade collapses in the arms of George II, assisted by Queen Caroline; verses beneath claim that the popularity of the Beggar's Opera is indicative of the sorry state of the country. At bottom right is a scene in Newgate with men and women sitting round a table on which is a punch bowl and pipes; they are toasting a laureated John Gay who sits at the centre, saying 'The Beggers Opera for yr', 'G(a)y for ever', 'Let's vote him King of the Beggers' and he responds, 'Yov'e done me too great an honour but I'll -'; a small child stands beside the table; two columns of verse beneath."-- British Museum online catalogue
