"Satire on the attempt to establish an Anglican episcopacy in the American colonies. A group of angry colonists push away from a quayside a ship named “The Hilsborough” (a reference to Wills Hill, Earl of Hillsborough, Secretary of State who had ordered troops to Boston in June 1768) On the ship is a large carriage with its wheels and a crosier and mitre beside it. A bishop is climbing the rigging saying “Lord, now lettest thou thy Servant depart in Peace” (Archbishop Secker who died in August 1768 had left £1000 to help establish a bishopric in North America). The colonists are shown as advocates of liberty of conscience and religious non-conformism: one waves a large book lettered “Sydney on Government”, another brandishes “Locke”; “Calvins Works” has already been thrown towards the bishop; another colonist waves a flag, topped with the cap of liberty and emblazoned with the words “Liberty & Freedom of Conscience”; a Quaker holds “Barclay’s Apology” saying “No Lords Spiritual or Temporal in New England”. A monkey on the quay holds a stone as if intending to throw it at the bishop. A paper lies on the ground lettered “Shall they be obliged to maintain Bishops that cannot maintain themselves”. Simeon Baldwin (1761-1851) (Yale 1781) was born in Norwich in the Connecticut Colony and practiced law in New Haven. In 1790, he was elected New Haven city clerk--he served this position until his election as a Federalist to the United States Eighth Congress, which he held from 1803 March 4 to 1805 March 3. Baldwin was associate judge of the Superior Court from 1806 to 1808 and the Connecticut Supreme Court of Errors from 1808 to 1818. In 1826, he served as the Mayor of New Haven., Baldwin was married to Rebecca Sherman Baldwin (1764-1795), with whom he had seven children--among them were Ebenezer Baldwin (1790-1837) and Roger S. Baldwin (1793-1863) (Yale 1811)., and Source unknown.

A collection of holograph letters from Beauford Delaney addressed (collectively) to his friend, Don Freeman, Freeman's wife, Lydia, and their son, Roy. The letters cover events in Delaney's life, spent during most of this period in Paris, and news of mutual friends. A crude portrayal of a fight on the floor of Congress between Vermont Representative Matthew Lyon and Roger Griswold of Connecticut. The row was originally prompted by an insulting reference to Lyon on Griswold's part. The interior of Congress Hall is shown, with the Speaker Jonathan Dayton and Clerk Jonathan W. Condy (both seated), Chaplain Ashbel Green (in profile on the left), and several others looking on, as Griswold, armed with a cane, kicks Lyon, who grasps the former's arm and raises a pair of fireplace tongs to strike him. Below are the verses: "He in a trice struck Lyon thrice / Upon his head, enrag'd sir, / Who seiz'd the tongs to ease his wrongs, / And Griswold thus engag'd, sir."
