"Peking [Beijing] 1927." An octagonal pagoda with seven levels and relief sculpture on the sides of the base is shown in the foreground. Another pagoda can be seen on a hill in the distance.
"Kunming pagoda ΜΆ just across the creek from Evan's." A white square pagoda is shown above several buildings. Trees can be seen at the top level of the structure.
" (2) This is not the same curved masonry bridge as is shown in the first postcard. There were dozens of them. As I remember, the number of bridges and tunnels ran around 170-190 of each. R.R. in Indo China. 1938. Yunnan N. 55 Viaduc km 1714000." Railroad tracks are shown on a tall bridge and winding up a hillside.
"(3) This is the cantilever bridge at the head of a long, long ravine, up which the railroad ran to gain altitutde. I imagine on the map this detour must look something like this: (hand diagram) with the further part of the loop hundreds of feet above the nearer - or thousand of feet. The two parts of the bridge were built perpendicular on the cliff wall, then lowered down & pinned together." A train is shown crossing a trestle bridge in a mountain gorge.
"This is on the big canal going down to the lake. There is a 'mah-lu' along the edge. Aren't the reflections good?" Tree trunks are reflected in placid water along a canal walkway.
