Abstract:
Tall, elegantly dressed elderly gentleman stands in center of a room looking with disgust over his left shoulder at large round tripod table on which lies a crying infant in a straw basket. He holds a raised cane in his right hand and a tricorne hat under his right arm. From his left side hangs a tasselled sword. The baby's basket has a ribbon inscribed 'To Simon Spindleshanks, Esq.' Behind his master, to the left, stands a grinning manservant who is showing delight in what he has brought about. In the background are beautifully panelled walls hung with two paintings which amplify the subject of the print. The one on the left depicts a violent storm; in the one on the right Delilah with Samson asleep at her knee, beckons soldiers to enter the room

Toward the foot of column two begins "The maiden's answer."., Date conjectured by cataloguer based on other editions of this work., Imprint below last column, separate by a single rule., In this edition, the illustration above the second column is of a man and a woman seated, bodies touching, with no tree. He reaches toward a younger woman in a cap and apron who is looking down and away from him. On the left is bed with curtains and on the wall, a framed picture of Cupid shooting an arrow. The letterpress text below, in two columns, provides a timeline for a man's life, starting at the age of 16 listed at the beginning of each line, tells the humorous tale of the consequences of a man putting off marriage for prideful reasons from age "16 - incipient palpitations towards the young ladies", through the ages of "29 - rails against the fair sex", "37 - indulge in every kind of dissipation", and "48 - thinks living alone quite irksome ...". Eventually, he resolves to have a prudent young woman as housekeeper and companion, gradually feeling some attachment to her and becoming completely under her influence. At age 60, as he begins to feel ill, and "grows rapidly worse, has his will made in her favour, and makes an exit."
