"In a plainly furnished room a whole family suffers. An elderly 'cit' and a skinny old woman register acute discomfort. Between their chairs is a round table on which is a dish of cherries and currants. A stout maidservant (left) drinks from a bottle she has taken from a store-cupboard. A little boy, a cat, and a dog are afflicted. A door opens into a bedroom (right) where a little girl relieves herself; another tries to kick her from her seat. A lady (Mrs. Catherine Macaulay) with an aquiline profile sits at a table opposite a clergy man (Dr. Wilson) as she writes with a quill pen. The walls are lined with full bookshelves separated in the middle by a fireplace with a mantelpiece on which sits a bust of "Alfred rex". Both figures wear the same enormous hair as in British Museum no. 5441

A scene in a fashionable library with ladies and gentlemen conversing with attendants at the counters on either side. On the left a woman looks in a book while her male companion converses with a clergyman, as the woman behind the counter consults a book. On the right, a man sits in a chair as a lady discusses her choices with the man behind the counter who reaches for a book below a sign 'Stamp'. Behind him is another sign "Just published [...]" An older woman with a walking stick approaches the counter on the right, followed by a Black servant and a dog. The windows are filled with books and prints. Through the open door a woman with an umbrella is silhouetted; to the left another sign "History Westminster and its monuments."

"The dentist, short, fat, and bald, stands in back view on a low stool, his knees pressed against the chair, his left arm round the victim's neck; he tugs at an upper tooth. The thin elderly patient raises her left leg in agony, overturning the folding wash-stand on which the dentist's appliances are spread. These include a basin, cup (both spilling their contents), a double set of teeth, a hammer, and a stoppered jar which falls against a large pier-glass, starring it. Both are unaware of the accident, though a little dog barks from under the table. The glass reflects dentist and patient, showing the latter gripping the arm of the chair. There is a window (right), the lower part screened by a slatted green shade. Above this dangle teeth with large blood-stained roots. On a chest of drawers-bookcase are laid out sets of false teeth. The books are Warbler; Winter in London; Lock on the Gums; Miseries of Human Life [Beresford, see See British Museum catalogue No. 10815, &c]; Bible; Tales of the Devil; Tommy Two Shoes; Treatise on Tooth Powder & Brushes; Feast of Wit; Tales of Terror, and two big volumes of Frankensteiv [sic] [Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, published 1818]. Lord Thurlow depicted as a schoolmaster is seated on the left. He wears an enormous wig, and holds in his left hand the book "A new guide to India" and in his right a birch rod. Facing him stands Pitt dressed as a young girl, with a key (to the Treasury) hanging from her belt. On the wall behind them hangs a portait of the King labelled "a great Whig", a bust of Fox labelled "a true Whig" on top of a bookcase containing Newbery's Works, and a map with the face of Shelburne titled "a false Whig." The "h" in the first word of the title is inserted above the "i".
