Abstract:
"Satire on gullible youths and dishonest prostitutes. A bedroom in which a young countryman is seated at a table between two young women. His right leg is slung across the legs of the woman on the left; she wears a quilted petticoat and her neckline plunges to reveal a breast; she puts an arm around his shoulder and with the other picks his purse from pocket. His left arm is around the waist of the other woman, who gazes seductively at him and offers a punchbowl; playing cards lie on the table and the Queen of Hearts has fallen to the floor. On the back of the first woman's chair sits a parrot chewing a twist of lemon peel; the pimp and an old bawd stand behind the bed curtain watching the scene; a picture on the wall shows a sheep being fleeced; in front of the table, a dog chews the young man's copy of "The Journey to London"."--British Museum online catalogue

"A number of ladies (eleven in all) sit at a table at the head of which is their president or chairman. They are balloting for the admission of a member, according to the 'Authentic Rules of the Female Coterie' printed in the 'Gentleman's Magazine', 1770, p. 414, by which ladies balloted for men and men for ladies. The president sits in a raised chair, a hammer in her right hand; she says: "Mr Driver the New Member shall be admitted & duly return'd by me the proper Officer if upon examination he comes up to the Standard". Remarks from other ladies (left to right) are: "I hold up my hand for Mr Driver, if it had not been for him, several Noble Families would have been extinct that have now a numerous Issue"; "The ability of every Candidate ought to be strictly Examined"; "The Gentleman to be elected into this Society shall not be Husband to any of us"; "No our plan is to supply the deficiency of Husbands"; "I move for the Admission of Mr Driver as a Member. He has a promising Leg, an happy Assurance, & to crown the whole he is an Irishman"; "Lady H------n [Harrington] has her Reasons for not suffering Mr Driver to return to Ireland, but she must not Engross him all to herself". The lady on the President's right is writing in a large book. "Burdett in armour stands with legs astride, sword raised, left fist clenched, making an onslaught on a book which is on the ground, its pages slashed and tattered. On these are fragments of inscriptions: 'Red Book for the . . .'; 'Treasury'; 'Pensions' [twice]; 'Pensions 4000, 3000, 2.400'; 'Teller o the Ex[chequer] . . . 6000 4.000'; 'Sinecu[res]'. He declaims: "I will not stop, - till I have cut out the accursed leaves of the Red Book!!!" His sword-blade is 'Took's Improved Steel'. On the right Tooke peers at him, holding aside a curtain; he says: "Come Come my pupil goes on better than I expected - very indeed for a beginning yes - yes - he'll do after a little practice" [see British Museum Satires No. 10731, &c.]. He holds a book: 'Diversions of Purley' [see (e.g.) British Museum Satires No. 9020]. On the left John Bull, dressed as Sancho Panza with a short tunic and ruff, gapes at his master, his hands on his knees. He says: "What the deuce is he at now! he will certainly get himself into some scrape or other." A scene in a fashionable library with ladies and gentlemen conversing with attendants at the counters on either side. On the left a woman looks in a book while her male companion converses with a clergyman, as the woman behind the counter consults a book. On the right, a man sits in a chair as a lady discusses her choices with the man behind the counter who reaches for a book below a sign 'Stamp'. Behind him is another sign "Just published [...]" An older woman with a walking stick approaches the counter on the right, followed by a Black servant and a dog. The windows are filled with books and prints. Through the open door a woman with an umbrella is silhouetted; to the left another sign "History Westminster and its monuments."
