"Illustration to 'The Empire of the Nairs', pp. 175-9, referring to verses published in the 'Scourge', iii. 313-18, 456-61, 'The H- [Hertford] Dynasty, or the Empire of the Nairs', suggested by the romance of J.H. Lawrence, 'The Empire of the Nairs', 1811 (published in German in 1811, and afterwards in French), with an introduction seriously advocating the introduction of these customs into England. The Nairs (or Nayars) were a military caste of Malabar who practised polyandry. The plate is not elucidated. Lady Hertford reclines in an ornate bath, into which water gushes from the jaws of a monster which decorates the pedestal of a Venus. The bath is raised on a triple dais and backed by the pillars and canopy which frame the Venus forming the centre of the design. The Regent, in royal robes, ascends the steps of the dais, poised on his toes like a ballet-dancer, and places a crownlike marquis's coronet on the head of Lady Hertford who leans towards him, her enormous breasts appearing over the edge of the bath. She says: "I proclaim the Freedom of the Sex & the Supremacy of Love." Lord Hertford, who bestrides the pedestal, looks down delightedly from behind the statue of Venus. He has horns, and holds his Chamberlain's staff. The water pours from the bath through the nostrils of a bull's head with which it is ornamented, and falls in a triple cascade into a circular basin in the centre foreground. On each side of the statue of Venus and flanking the dais is a statue in a niche: 'Aspasia' (left) and 'Messalina' (right); both are disrobing. Near the fountain (right) a hideous hag, naked to the waist, crouches before a tall brazier in which she burns a 'Mantle of Modesty'. The building appears to be circular, an arc of the wall forming a background on each side of the centre-piece. On this are tablets inscribed respectively 'Hic Jacet Perdita' [Mary Robinson, the Prince's first mistress, see No. 5767, &c.]; 'Hic Jacet Armstead' [Mrs. Fox, who had been the Prince's mistress, cf. No. 10589]; 'Hic J[acet] Vauxhall Bess' [Elizabeth Billington, see British Museum Satires No. 9970; her mother sang at Vauxhall, see British Museum Satires No. 6853]. In the foreground on the extreme right a buxom young woman puts her arms round the Duke of Cumberland, saying, "I'll go to Cumberland"; he walks off with her, to the fury of an admiral just behind the lady who clutches his sword and is seemingly her husband. Cumberland wears hussar uniform with a shako and fur-bordered dolman, with a star and a large sabre. A meretricious-looking young woman (? Mrs. Carey) puts her arms round the Duke of York, saying, "And I to York." The Duke, who wears uniform with a cocked hat and no sword, looks down quizzically at her. Behind him a tall thin officer in hussar uniform bends towards Princess Charlotte, taking her hand; he says: "Sure & I'll go to Wales." She runs eagerly towards him. As a pendant to these figures, Grenadiers stand at attention on the left, holding bayoneted muskets; they have huge noses, and smile at a buxom lady wearing spurred boots who addresses them with outstretched arm, saying, "And you for Buckinghamshire." At her feet is an open book: 'Slawkenberges Chapr on Noses' [from Sterne's Slawkenbergius, imaginary author of a Rabelaisian fantasy in 'Tristram Shandy']. They have a standard with the word 'Buckin ...' on it. Behind the Prince (left) stands Tom Moore, looking up at the coronation; he holds an open book: 'Little Poems / Ballad . . .' He says: "I'll give you one Little Song More [see British Museum Satires No. 12082]." Behind him stands Mrs. Jordan, placing a chamber-pot on the head of the Duke of Clarence, who wears admiral's uniform with trousers."--British Museum online catalogue

Seven Hundred gone smack; - without a single Cock of the Cards!" She fills the centre of the design, and is much larger than her husband. Her guests are crowded together on the right. A pretty young woman, Mrs. Concannon, seated on her left, clasps her hands, exclaiming, "Bank stole! - why I had a Gold snuffbox stole last night from my Table in Grafton Street." Lady Archer, on the extreme right, on the nearer side of the table, turns a corvine and angry profile towards Lord Buckinghamshire, saying, "Stole! - bless me why a Lady had her Pocket pick'd at my House last Monday." Opposite her sits Fox, wearing a hat and putting his hand over his mouth, saying, "Zounds! I hope they dont Smoke me." Sheridan looks over his shoulder, saying, "nor me". Behind Fox, Hanger stands in profile to the left, wearing a hat and holding his bludgeon; he says: "O! if they come to the Mount, if I don't tip them Shelalee" (see BMSat 8889). ... "A see-saw representing the state of the poll between Fox and Wray, Mrs. Hobart (left) seated on one end, the Duchess of Devonshire (right) on the other, in front of the polling-booth in Covent Garden. Mrs. Hobart, enormously fat, quite out-weighs the Duchess, and is, moreover, held down by Lord Hood who kneels behind her (left), while Sir Cecil Wray stands beside him watching the contest with an enigmatical expression. Fox stands behind the Duchess trying to hold down her end of the plank, but in vain; his uplifted left arm and closed eyes express the despair which he actually felt in the early days of polling (Russell, 'Corr. of Fox', ii. 267). The ladies face each other astride the plank, their arms outstretched, their bosoms bare. The plank rests on an irregular stone post. An excited crowd, very freely sketched, watches from the hustings and from below them; they scream encouragement to the rivals, waving their hats. Over the head of Wray is a playbill, 'The Rival Candidates Farce'; behind the Duchess is another, 'Duke and no Duke Play'. "The Duchess of Devonshire, carrying Fox on her back, approaches an alehouse. The host, a black man named 'Mungo', stands on his doorstep delightedly filling a glass for the Duchess; a fat disreputable slattern stands behind him. The Duchess, who supports herself by a large staff, holds a full purse in her hand, saying, "For the good of the Constitution give me a Glass of Gin", the suggestion being that she will pay a large sum for the gin to secure a vote (cf. British Museum Satires No. 6548). Her hat with ostrich plumes and fox's brush has a favour inscribed 'Fox ForNi'. Fox, one hand resting on her shoulder, waves his hat; they are both in profile to the right. Over the doorway of the alehouse (or perhaps brothel) is inscribed 'Mungo's Hotel Dealer in British Spirits'; the woman says, "Give the poor Man a Vote my Dear he is a good Man for the Ladies". A dog beside her barks at the visitors. The gabled roofs and casement windows indicated in the background suggest that this is an old and disreputable part of Westminster, resembling Peter Street as in British Museum Satires No. 6548. The crowd, which is very freely sketched, also suggests a low neighbourhood; a man and woman walk or dance along, their arms round each other's shoulders; he flourishes a full tankard. An excited group shout and wave their hats round two tall standards: one, 'Fox and Liberty all over the world', above two crossed executioner's axes, the other, 'Rights of the Commons' and 'No Prerogative', with a cap of Liberty on the pole."--British Museum online catalogue

"The Duchess of Devonshire (right) fights Mrs. Hobart (left). The right fist of the Duchess is near her opponent's nose, her left hand is on her hip. Mrs. Hobart, both fists extended, says: "I'll have no more for my Nose Bleeds"; the Duchess answers: "I have not done yet Madam." A backer stands behind each; Fox (right) says, "Well done Georgiana to her again". A hand extends from clouds holding a laurel wreath over his head. Wray, behind Mrs. Hobart, says, "If she Cant Beat her A Scrutiny Shall". A hand from clouds holds a fool's cap over his head on which is a butterfly and an ass's ear. Behind Wray, holding a cane, stands Lord Hood saying, "Alas poor Judas you will lose ye day". The dishevelled hair of the ladies hangs down their backs: Mrs. Hobart, very stout and 'décolletée', the Duchess, slim and wearing a riding-habit with a coat of military cut. She has two Fox favours in her hat, ostrich feathers (see BMSat 6530), and a fox's brush.
