"The Pump Room at Bath is crowded with people striving to see Queen Charlotte, who sits in an arm-chair facing the low barrier surrounding the pump. She holds a goblet, and puts a hand to her waist, exclaiming "Oh! my belly! my belly! Oh the water the water!" She wears a fashionable bonnet with a fringed shawl over her long limp gown, with high-heeled shoes of antique pattern. Her snuff-box is on the ground. Two women stand by her, one with a bottle of 'Old Tom' saying "Here Madam Here's Old Tom [strong gin], they say he's a famous Docter for the Belly Ache"; the other says: "let me advice you to put Old Tom in.!" The Duke of Clarence in naval uniform leans on the back of the Queen's chair, saying, "Brandy the specific for the Belly Ache George & I always recomend Brandy." A man pumps (right); an elderly woman hands glasses to the company who, with the Queen, are all, with two exceptions, behind a red rope attached to the barrier. Those behind stand on tables and chairs to see the Queen. A doctor looks towards her, saying, "Three seconds more will produce a Motion." "The reduction of the Prince of Wales's establishment at Carlton House is represented as the auction scene in 'The School for Scandal' (iv. 1). 'Lot 1', a portrait of the King and Queen, as a farmer and his wife, a copy of BMSat 6934 reversed, is being held up for sale by (?) Sheridan. The Prince, as Charles Surface, stands in the middle of the room, legs apart, his cane raised above his head, right hand in his breeches-pocket, saying, "Careless, Knock down the Farmer". George Hanger as Careless stands in a high-backed arm-chair (right), his hammer raised above his head, saying, "Going for no more than One Crown". Weltje, a stout man, stands beside the rostrum, his arms folded, looking down at a pile of plate at his feet inscribed 'Lot 6'. On the left stand three men: the bidder, pencil and note-book in his hand, saying, "Five shillings for that Lot", and two military officers, one stout, the other slim and foppish, looking through an eye-glass at the picture. 'Lot 2' and 'Lot 3' are pictures still on the wall, Three quarter length portraits of Mrs. Fitzherbert, her hands in a muff, and a lady wearing a large feathered hat, perhaps the Duchess of Devonshire, cf. BMSat 6961, &c. 'Lot 5' is a saddle on the floor beside a pair of top-boots. Abstract:
In a large room French aristocrats crowd across a table from Pitt who is taking money while handing a pen to the man opposite who holds a crown in his left arm as he throws coins toward Pitt's grasping hand. Above Pitt stands George III behind podium, gavel in one hand and another crown extended toward one of the many bidders shouting comments and prices. The King calls out, "This is a lot, gentlemen, of superior brilliancy to the last. This, this raises you above your fellows in a very high degree indeed. I pity your distresses from my soul, what, what, what was that you were saying about jewels, Madames, too high. You may ride over the necks of half the nation with this upon your coach. You may get in debt as fast as you please and never pay. Mind that gentlemen, never pay." The Queen walks up a ladder behind the King to retrieve more crowns from the shelves behind the King's podium, turning her head to say, "Pay some attention to that Lady's jewels, my love."
