"The Duke of York (left), in regimentals and wearing a cocked hat, stands in profile to the right, tipsily swaggering; he hands to George III two large keys: 'Keys of Paris'. The King, seated on the throne (right) in hunting-dress, leans eagerly forward. The Duke is followed by soldiers bearing (worthless) trophies of victory; he says: "Th-th-th-there's Paris for you, damme! did not I say I'd take it? -th-thats all! - a-a-and here's all the Plunder of France! and all the Heads of the whole nation of Sans Culottes, damme! - if y-y-you will do me any honor, why do it; - if not, why even take the next Paris yourself, damme! - look 'e I expect to be made either a Cæsar or an Alexander! ------, d-d-d-d-damme!' The King, eagerly goggling, says: "What! what! Keys of Paris! Keys of Paris! give us hold! gads bobs, its nothing but, Veni, with you, lad, hay? Veni, Vidi? - ay, ay! Veni, Vidi, Vici! - ay, ay." A tricolour standard inscribed 'Vive la Liberta' lies at the King's feet. Behind the Duke are French weapons, broken: a sword inscribed 'Vive la Lib . .', a cannon similarly inscribed, cannon-balls, a musket, and a pile of decapitated heads wearing bonnets-rouges, on which tramples the Duke's secretary, who holds out a scroll inscribed: 'Authentic Journal - Issuing Manifesto's - Taking Dunkirk [see BMSat 8341] 1500 Barrels of Gunpowder 32 pieces of Cannon, & killing 5000 Troops, - sending off 10000 to the hospitals in Flanders - marching into the heart of France, & finishing the War without expence. Js Suckfizzle Secretary.' The secretary, who wears regimentals, a pen behind his ear, says, "Here's something like a List of glorious Actions! - well, let them that come after us do as much as we have done, and the Campaign will soon come to a conclusion." Behind him, guardsmen advance carrying bulky burdens: bales of 'Assignats', a large basket of sabots inscribed 'Wooden Shoes of the Poissards', a bundle of 'Breeches of the Sans Coulotte[s]', a pot from which frogs are leaping. Pitt sits on the dais at the King's left hand; he writes on papers which he supports on his up-drawn knees: 'Bricks Rum - Brandy Water Air'; 'new Taxes not to be felt by the Swinish Multitude'; 'loan of Eleven Millions.' Behind the throne (right) sits the Queen in profile to the right, gleefully holding out an apron into which the Devil shovels coins from a sack inscribed 'Two Millions Pr Annm'; only his horns, arms, and a hoof appear on the extreme right. "The King and Queen, seated on the throne (left), receive with astonished horror a deputation from Turkey. An arrogant Turk stands proffering a large rolled document with pendent seals on which are crescents: 'Powers for a new Connexion between the Port, England & France'. Beside him (left) another Turk grovels on the ground. Fox and Sheridan, kneeling with crouching humility, hold up the long cloak of the Turkish emissary; their bonnets-rouges are decorated with crescents. Behind them Priestley bows low (right). Turks with spears and banners stand behind him. To a spear topped with a crescent is attached a tricolour flag inscribed 'Vive la Republique'. Pitt, a naked mannikin, one foot on the royal dais, clutches the King's knee in terror: a chain from his wrist is attached to a royal crown lying on the ground. Behind him, and beside the throne, stands Dundas in Highland dress, tall and impassive, holding a pike. The King and Queen are much caricatured: the King stares, biting his fingers and clutching the Queen; she puts her fan before her face but looks through its sticks (as in BMSat 9528) at the Turks. "The interior of a church (? the Chapel Royal) showing pulpit, side-gallery, and pews beneath the gallery. Wilkes (left) is the preacher, beneath him is his clerk, Pitt. At a right angle to the gallery is the royal pew (right), from which the King looks with earnest attention to the preacher. Queen Charlotte, her fingers to her mouth, also listens attentively. A lady-in-waiting and a courtier with a long wand (Lord Salisbury, the Lord Chamberlain) stand behind. The pew is decorated with the royal arms and has a canopy. In the centre of the gallery sit the Prince of Wales and Mrs. Fitzherbert; he turns away from the preacher, looking at her. Behind him stands George Hanger; behind Mrs. Fitzherbert sits a man looking at Wilkes through a spy-glass. Between him and the royal pew are three men in legal wigs and gowns: Pepper Arden, Dundas, and (?) Kenyon. Between the Prince and the pulpit sit North (asleep) and Burke, looking intently at Wilkes; a lady (? Duchess of Devonshire) attempts to wake North. In the seats under the gallery sit parties of citizens, in general asleep or inattentive. Below the royal pew stands Fox on a low stool as a penitent draped in a sheet; he wears a placard inscribed 'For Playing Cards on the Lord's Day'. A stout lady with an aquiline nose stands near Pitt; with a raised whip she chases a number of dogs out of the church. She has some resemblance to the Duchess of Gordon, a friend of Pitt. Immediately behind Mrs. Fitzherbert and between two Gothic windows is a wall-tablet inscribed: 'This Tablet is erected to the memory of the renowned Plenipotentiary who died by the bow string a short time after his return to Algiers. Two maiden ladies of this Parish who tasted exquisite felicity from his Prowess, dedicate this frail memorial to his loved memory'. Cf. British Museum Satires No. 7935, &c. "A satire on the struggle between Pitt and Thurlow travestied as a scene from 'Paradise Lost'. Pitt (left) is Death, wearing the king's crown and using a long sceptre as a weapon. Thurlow (right) is Satan; he raises the (breaking) mace to smite, and holds out an oval shield decorated with the bag of the Great Seal and a tiny woolsack. The Queen, as Sin, naked, with snaky locks (Medusa-like), and two writhing serpents for legs, interposes with outstretched arms, looking with terrified face at Thurlow in her desire to protect Pitt. She is a hideous hag with pendent breasts; from her snaky hair hangs a large key inscribed 'The Instrument of all our Woe', and evidently symbolizing Secret Influence ... Pitt's naked body is emaciated and corpse-like; from his shoulders hangs a long ermine-trimmed cloak; his sceptre radiates darts of lightning. His face expresses alarm and determination. Behind him, and guarding the gate of Hell which is indicated by a stone arch, is Cerberus, with the profile heads of Dundas, Grenville, and Richmond, looking up at Thurlow; their body terminates in a large serpent with a barbed tail. Thurlow has wings, and is naked except for a quasi-Roman kilt. He wears his Chancellor's wig, his profile and eyebrow are of a terrifying fierceness; serpents twine round his shield, and spit fire at Pitt and the Queen; a serpent entwined in Pitt's crown, and others in the Queen's snaky locks, retaliate. On the right are the flames of Hell in which demons are flying; smoke fills the background. Beneath the design is etched: 'NB: The above performance containing Portraits of the Devil & his Relatives, drawn from the Life, is recommended to Messrs Boydell, Fuselli & the rest of the Proprietors of the Three Hundred & Sixty Five Editions of Milton now publishing, as necessary to be adopted, in their classick Embellishments.'"-- British Museum online catalogue
