"A cobbler flourishes a strap, while a little woman in Turkish trousers and jewelled turban runs away behind him. On the left is his shed and a bench with tools. Behind is a large quasi-oriental building, with minaret and dome. The verses relate how the cobbler thrashed his very small wife who ran away between his legs 'for ever'. "Boswell and two men in Highland dress dance a Highland fling on the summit of a low mountain, with the sea and a low spur of land on the horizon. Boswell, full-face, capers; his wig and pendant ink-pot with the pen in it, stream in the wind. He flourishes his 'Journal'; his left hand is in that of one of his companions (right); the other (left) dances a 'pas seul' looking at Boswell; both hold long sticks. "Caricature portrait, whole length, of a man in profile walking to the right, grotesquely dressed, probably for a masquerade. In his right hand he holds a rod to each end of which is slung a fox's tail. A large fox's tail hangs from the back of his neck. A bell hangs outwards from the back of his waist. A ribbon flutters from his right arm. He wears a small cap with a tuft of feathers at the top. Rows of feathers (quills) or ribbons hang from his cap, his waist, and from the tops of his stockings which leave his knees bare."--British Museum online catalogue and "At the masquerades (c. 1772) groups of young men from the universities, some dressed as "Tom fools with cap and bells", were conspicuous. ... Her demure dress contrasts with that of a woman, who, much alarmed, runs off to the left from beside the King. Sidmouth (left) and Castlereagh (right), both in Chinese dress, are equally terrified, and Lord Eldon peeps anxiously from behind a little pagoda. Both visitors extend an arm towards the King in an authoritative gesture. Words float from them towards the King: 'Nothing extenuate nor set down aught in Malice [Othello, v. ii] men sleeping with her at Black Heath 1808 v. call Hoods [sic].'"--British Museum online catalogue
