Abstract:
"Joanna Southcott, a stout termagant, stands in back view directed slightly to the right, gathering up her petticoats to display her person to three doctors who gaze closely at her. She is grossly caricatured, with no resemblance to her portraits. She says, her head turned in profile to the right, and looking up with a triumphant smile: "Seeing is believing are you Now satisfied theres no [sic] Behold the Naked Truth most Learned Doctors." The doctors, who are crouching for closer inspection, say respectively: "It has a confounded strange appeara[nce]"; "I have my doubts"; "I cant help suspecting". Across her posteriors, defined by the pulling up of her petticoats, is engraved: 'Aged 64 Bladders of Blasphemy and Corruption Sealed up and Ready to Burst'. On the left is a large cradle of straw in which is seated a grotesque parson with horns projecting from his forehead; he holds a spoon and a bowl inscribed 'Caudle'; beside him is a paper: 'Cradle Hymns'. He leers cunningly. The cradle is inscribed 'Parson Towser' and 'Cradle for Joanna's Boar Pig'. A bird-like demon, grinning grotesquely, crouches on the head of the cradle. Against it lies a sack inscribed 'Donations Child Bed Linen for young Beelzebub'. Beside this lie a large coral and bells, pap-spoon, syringes, a little saucepan, &c. (presents from the faithful). Beside Johanna (right) is a chest (as in British Museum Satires No. 12334) inscribed 'Joanna Southcot's Prophecys' and 'Seals for Sale'. Other things beside it are a syringe inscribed 'infusion of Devils Dose', a paper inscribed 'Game of Humbug', a bowl of 'Cock Broth for Tom Tozer', and a decanter of 'Strong Water'. A scene in an artist's studio lit from an attic window (left). Four connoisseurs are grouped round a large canvas on an easel: an Apollo with a sheaf of arrows, head turned in profile to the left. The model is a tall black man in the pose of the Apollo but with very different features, the left hand holding the stick of a broom which supports the pose. A fifth connoisseur reaches up to alter the position of the model's head. The artist stands beside his canvas facing the invaders, the left hand, holding palette and brushes, rests on the canvas; he sucks his mahl-stick with a gloomy scowl. On the extreme right a cat sits in a cradle, behind which an alarmed little boy hides. The artist's wife, with an infant in her arms, faces the fire with her back to the visitors whose unwelcome intrusion is apparent. Behind is a bed with drawn curtains. Three casts from the antique decorate the bare room. The model's coat and hat lie on the ground (right). On the far left in the foreground a dog urinates against two canvases leaning against the wall

"George IV as the 'Great Babe' lies asleep in his cradle rocked by Lady Conyngham, while Wellington, seated before a pier-glass, places the crown on his own head. The glass reflects the dark emaciated features of British Museum Satires No. 15520. The Duke wears a uniform with boots and sword. On a table below the glass the sceptre and orb lie on a cushion. Lady Conyngham, with a towering coiffure as in British Museum Satires No. 15508, croons: Oh slumber my darling | The time may soon come | When thy rest may be broken | By Trumpet & Drum [the last three words in large letters]. The infant sucks a thumb; a gouty foot projects from the coverlet. On the floor is a line of toys: a sailing boat on wheels, a model of Buckingham Palace reconstructed by Nash as in British Museum Satires No. 15668, a giraffe (see British Museum Satires No. 15425), a Life Guard on a toy horse, a Foot-Guard, a dismantled or unfinished ship resting on a prostrate toy soldier. "A stuffed figure of George IV, heavy, inert, and puppet-like, wearing royal robes and with massive antlers on his forehead, is supported by his three chief Ministers. Under his legs are two prostrate men; his left foot is planted on the face of one who wears the remains of a tattered shoe. Sidmouth takes his right leg and holds it out towards the Queen, who escapes to the left. She is protected by John Bull, a stout countryman, who smashes the King's extended leg with a cudgel of 'oak', breaking off the foot. John, with clenched fist, says: "Dom thee, what Kick a defenceless Woman 'the Cowardly Rascal!" Castlereagh and Liverpool (right) support the King's shoulders. Behind (right) is a copy of British Museum Satires No. 13765: the King sleeps in a cradle (as in British Museum Satire No. 13764, &c.) rocked by Lady Conyngham, who sings: "hush my babe lie still & slumber 'tis Eliza guards thy Bed." The cradle is decorated with a pagoda, the Royal Arms, and a nude obese squatting Chinese, symbolizing the King. The Queen, looking behind her vengefully, escapes towards a Chinese doorway. Her own infant, seated on the ground (right) neglected, stretches out her arms to her mother with a protesting scream. In the foreground (left) a cat licks the face of a dog which sits on its hind legs, while a kitten crawls neglected beside it. Behind the animals is an empty cradle. On the wall (left) is Reynolds's portrait of the Duke of Devonshire standing beside his horse, as in British Museum Satires No. 6529.
