The group (right) is raised on a low semicircular platform, the couple sit on a high-backed settee without arms, the little boy on a stool in front of his mother. The child, though in his ordinary clothes, is holding a cupid's bow and a sheaf of arrows (reminiscent of the family portrait in the 'Vicar of Wakefield'); a large quiver holding arrows is slung across his shoulders, a wreath is on his head; he yawns violently. The man, in profile to the left, is obese and wears a short bushy wig, a dove sits on his left wrist; only the toes of his shoes reach the ground. His wife sits on his right holding a dove on her right hand; she turns towards her husband, looking straight forward with a fixed and painful smile; she wears ringlets and a cap of lace and ribbons on her high-dressed hair. The artist (left) stands at his easel which supports a large canvas and is placed close to his sitters. He wears spectacles, a bag-wig, and ruffled shirt, and holds a palette in his left hand. He looks towards his sitters with an insinuating smile, which, together with his attitude and the figure of the man sketched on the canvas, shows that he is intent on flattery. A companion plate to Le Départ (British Museum satire no. 12362), satirizing the haste of the English to visit France in 1814 and their gluttony and bad dressing. The Frenchman who cooks a cat is a subject of English caricatures on the favourite theme of the beggarly Frenchman and well-fed Englishman. In this print. "A lean Englishman strides on to the quayside from an (invisible) gangway leading to the deck of a packet, which is seen below (right), covered with the heads of passengers, looking eagerly upwards. The furled sails and rigging are on the extreme right; a dove holding an olive-branch sits on a spar. A jovial French cook leads the Englishman, who grasps his left wrist; he points to a doorway on the extreme left, below the sign 'Au Bien Venu'. He holds the white cotton night-cap which was the cap of the French cook, but is not foppish as in English caricature, but manly and sturdy. The traveller is a grotesque figure wearing a hat shaped like a flower-pot, [this hat appears in almost all satires on English costumes in Paris, c. 1814; it is worn by a man dressed à l'Anglais in No. 53 of the 'Bon Genre Series' (? 1813): 'Cheveux à Cherubin. Chapeau en pot à fleurs. Redingote en Robe de Chambre'; cf. J.-P. de Bérenger, 'Les Boxeurs', 1814: Quoique leurs chapeaux sont bien laids / Goddam! moi j'aime les Anglais] long tail-coat, wrinkled breeches, and long ill-fitting gaiters on very thin legs. His profile has an absurdly heavy chin (cf. British Museum no. 12364), and he registers eager expectation. On a flap projecting from a window beside the door are peaches, grapes, pears, &c. Within a courtyard a second cook leans from an attic window, knife in hand, to catch a cat by the tail, one of several scampering from the ridge-pole."--British Museum online catalogue

"Queen Caroline, not caricatured, wearing Bergami's miniature as in British Museum Satires No. 14103, &c., stands on the summit of a column holding out a paper inscribed 'R+G+NA still in spite of them.' Her left hand supports a medallion, inscribed 'Knight of Saint Caroline' [see British Museum Satires No. 13810], on which is a realistic bust portrait of Bergami, wearing an order, the head much larger than her own. Beside it on the capital stand two billing doves. The pedestal, which stands on a triple plinth, is inscribed 'This Column is intended to perpetuate the glorious adventures of an I - L - - T - - - - S F - M - - E' [illustrious female]. Two figures flank the pedestal, standing on the upper plinth: on the left the Princess, in scanty draperies as the 'Neapolitan Muse of History' [see British Museum Satires No. 13890, &c.], holds an open book: 'Boccaccio illustrated.' On the right, in contemporary dress, and garlanded with roses, she is 'Columbine of Como' [see British Museum Satires No. 14120, &c.]; she wears a simple garden hat in which are three peacock's feathers, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13299, &c. This plinth is centred by a Maltese cross supported by lion and unicorn. Above the pedestal and at the base of the column crouch two satyrs holding between them a ribbon inscribed 'Order of Saint Caroline' [see British Museum Satires No. 13810, &c.] from which dangles a large Maltese cross; one holds up a bottle of 'Acqua Vita', the other a goblet of wine. On the column are five realistic little scenes, divided by captions on a spiral border, incidents of the Princess's travels as related by the witnesses against her. These are, reading upwards: '[Ri]ding to Jerusalem'; she heads the procession on an ass (see British Museum Satires No. 13918, &c.). 'In the Tent', she and Bergami on adjacent couches, see British Museum Satires No. 13818. 'Taking a bath'; Bergami fills the bath in which she sits (see British Museum Satires No. 13819). 'On board the Polacre' [see British Museum Satires No. 13818]; Bergami sits on a cannon embracing the Princess who is on his knee. 'Returning with pillow'; she walks from a room in which Bergami lies (see British Museum Satires No. 13822, &c.). Above, and at the Princess's feet, is the inscription: 'Pleasures obtained with 30.000 Per annm'. The column is flanked by a trophy of eight banners, with inscriptions, all surmounted by emblems of societies which had supposedly presented Addresses to the Queen (cf. British Museum Satires No. 14119). On the left: 'Ladies Address--Birds of a Feather signed Queens Own'. This is surmounted by a crouching satyr-Cupid aiming his bow. Next, surmounted by a brush: 'Chimney sweepers--who says touching makes dirt.' Next, a banner with two white favours topped by a handbell: 'Honble Company of Dustmen--Dust-Ho!'
