Abstract:: "Long, dressed as a funeral mute or mourner, stands full-face, legs apart, carrying four large boards like a sandwich-man (then "board-man"). Only his draped hat and eyes appear above the central board. In his hand is a staff draped in black which is inscribed 'Killing No Murder' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 11371]. At his feet are many ducks, all angrily quacking: 'quack!!'; 'quack!!!'; or (one) 'cruel quack'. He says, quoting a nursery rhyme, 'Come, Dilly, Dilly, Dilly, come and be killed!!!' The principal board is headed 'To the Public', with the Royal Arms. Inscriptions: 'A Receipt of my Grandmothers | Decline Arrested | Consumption prevented | A Cure for all diseases | By The Simple | process of | Skinning Alive | protected by the | NOBILITY | and a House-Full of | Ladies | of the first Distinction | Dr Needy, Harley-Street | NO QUACKERY'. On both flanking boards are a grinning skull and cross-bones inscribed 'momento [sic] mori'; on one (left) are wine-glasses, tankard, and bottle and 'A Short Life and a Merry one'; (right) 'N.B. . Short Accounts make LONG Friends'. Behind is a funeral procession with two coffins, preceded by a duck. This passes the railings of a London square. Behind are houses, on one of which is a hatchment, and a church-steeple on which prances a tiny devil flourishing a trident."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:: "'Cits' (i.e. citizens) ride (left to right) (types of vulgar horsemanship, cf. BMSats 7233, 7242) in a cloud of dust, following a crowded stage-coach inscribed 'To the Races'. A rough two-wheeled cart, crammed with a family party, is drawn by a cantering pony. A signpost points 'To the Race Ground'. A suburban setting is given by the country box and 'grounds' of a 'cit', with a notice-board: 'Spring Blunderbusss on a new Construction - Planted in Various Paths of my Domain & whosown Trample Down or pull up the Shrubs in this Garden shall be Prosecuted - Deputy Dump'. In front of the house the owner (?) and his wife look over the paling at the race-goers. The house is a square box, whose small scale is indicated by the size of a pot-plant on the flat roof; on this are also figures of Neptune, Harlequin, and Mercury. Adjacent (left) is a shed inscribed 'Mr Dumps Stables', with a pretentious cupola."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:: "Two men sit in a dilapidated room, the floor completely covered by water in which three pigs wade, ducks swim and dive, and geese run aggressively towards a dog. Their feet rest on boulders. One stout man in a broken chair sits with his elbows on a small round table, holding up a large watch, the hands showing that it is 9.40, and yawning deeply. On the table are a decanter containing a tiny 'blue devil', cf. British Museum Satires No. 8745, and a guttering candle stuck in a potato at which a rat is nibbling. Another rat runs up the table leg. The other man (right), with closed eyes, and hands on knees, sits on a stool, registering melancholy resignation. One pig (left) devours a 'Racing Calendar' which floats on the water. A fire of sticks burns smokily on a wide hearth; a large pot is overturning, the contents gushing over. Above the chimney-piece hangs a picture in a broken frame of a country house. There is one small casement window, half boarded up, the other half partly stuffed up with a pair of breeches. A ham and a hare hang from hooks in the ceiling. High up on the wall is a small shelf on which is broken china; a cat stands on it."--British Museum online catalogue
