"The rival candidates swarm up a pole, inscribed 'Westminster Election', in front of the hustings in Covent Garden. At the top is Burdett with the body and beak of a goose ... He is precariously poised on one webbed foot, the right leg. hanging down, dripping blood from a wound in the thigh (from Paull's bullet), but he is supported by a pitchfork held against his rightump by Horne Tooke, or the Devil, who stands astride the roof of the hustings. Tooke has webbed wings inscribed 'Deceit' and 'Sedition', cloven hoof and barbed tail, with round hat, coat, and clerical bands. Burdett's wings are 'Conceit' and 'Vanity'; his neck is stretched out towards an irradiated sun in the upper right. corner of the design, at which he is hissing, 'ssss [&c]' issuing from his beak. On the disk is a crown on a cushion; it is encircled by the words: 'The Sun of the Constitution'. Just below the goose is Cochrane, wearing the cocked hat and coat of a naval officer with striped seaman's trousers. He is active and agile, one hand on the pole, and one leg round it. In his right. hand he holds up a bludgeon: 'Reform', shouting fiercely to the mob below; his right. foot rests on the cask which encloses the paunchy body of the man below (Elliot), who is falling backwards. From his pocket issues a paper: 'Charges against St Vincent.' Below him legs and arms wildly outflung emerge from the cask which is inscribed 'Quassia' ... The head of the falling cask, inscribed 'Elliots Home Br[ewed], drops off, and its foaming contents pour down. Elliot drops a paper: 'Sixpenny Jack's Address'. Below Elliot, Sheridan, in his Harlequin suit (see BMSat 9916), enormously fat, grasps the pole with arms and legs, making no progress. Below him Paull falls head foremost and in back view to the ground; he is dressed as in BMSat 10725 and his (wounded) left leg breaks above the top-boot. "Cobbett (right) stands facing six men grouped at a round table who applaud the toast he gives: 'Damnation to the House of Brunswick' [cf. No. 11234]. In his left hand is a bottle of 'True Napoleone Spirits'; the contents of his raised glass are exploding. On his right sits Horne Tooke, with a crutch, holding a jug of 'Botley Ale' and a glass, both frothing. He says with a sinister upturned glance: 'Huzza! Huzza'. On Cobbett's left, and in back view, stands a naval officer wearing a cocked hat and high fashionable boots. He holds high a steaming bowl of 'Botley Grog'; under his foot is a paper: 'Basque Roads- Court Martial', showing that he is Cochrane, see No. 11326, &c. Facing Cobbett sit Bosville and Clifford. Bosville, silent, decrepit, and senile, grasps a bottle of 'Botley Ale' and holds a foaming glass; in his pocket is a 'Plan for a new Convention'. Clifford, brandy-faced, and with his barrister's wig awry, holds a bottle of 'French Brandy' and a brimming glass, saying "Huzza". Behind these two stand Burdett and Folkestone. Each holds up a frothing glass; Burdett waves his bonnet rouge and shouts "Huzza!-Huzza!" Folkestone echoes "Huzza!" In the foreground with his back to the table lies Wardle, very sick, clasping a bottle of 'Botley Ale', and vomiting over papers: 'Charges against the Duke of York' and 'Reform', see No. 11328, &c. A cat (left), with a collar inscribed 'Mrs Clarke', miaows at him (see No. 11216, &c). On the right are a tankard inscribed 'Whitbread's Small Beer', and a wine-cooler containing five bottles of 'Napolean Wine' [cf. No. 11004]. The floor is boarded, but under Cobbett's chair is a fringed carpet. The room is lit by candles set in branches which decorate the oval frame of a half-length portrait of 'Napoleone Le Grand'; he is in profile to the right, looking down at Cobbett and holding out a 'Cordon d'Honor'. The portrait is flanked by busts on brackets: 'Despard' [see No. 9969] with a noose round his neck, and 'Robespiere' with two daggers. On the table by Clifford are two more bottles of 'French' [Brandy], by Cochrane a bottle labelled (?) 'Coitaris', an overturned bottle, and a plate of 'Diables'. Sailors carouse in a drunken orgy between decks; hammocks are slung from the roof and drunken sailors vomit over the sides into the crowd. Musicians play fiddles and drums. Men and women drink and dance. A negro fiddles; a Jew sits on the ground ready to receive the watch which a woman steals from a sailor as she sits stirring a bowl on a box labeled "T. Ockham'. A marine kicks over a bucket labeled with the ships name as he spills the contents of his mug onto a barefoot boy who in turn pours the contents of his kettle onto a dog. To the left is a large keg of rum. The scene is watched by smiling officers (left), among whom is Lord Cochrane. This wartime scene is called to mind by the sight of the frigate 'Peranga' lying off Spithead. See British Museum catalogue
