- Abstract:
- "A symbolical bust of Napoleon, dressed as a Roman emperor, is on a rectangular base on which are title and inscription : 'Symbolical of the Effects produced by that Cause which the enlightened [image of a fox] in [the] Eighteenth Century sagaciously predicted would ultimately prove a Stupendous Monument of Human Wisdom!!!' The head is turned in profile to the left; the features are conventional but express ferocity, with glaring eye and fierce frown. It wears a fantastic helmet wreathed with laurel from which blood drips. The wreath is entwined by serpents, whose (three) heads are clustered at the back with words in large letters issuing from their jaws: 'Rapine', 'Lust', 'Murder'. The word 'Invasion' issues in the same manner from the mouth. Above the wreath the helmet is encircled by a band on which are quasi-zodiacal signs: a scorpion, a sickle, a crescent, an arrow, a caduceus, a goat-like monster. On the helmet sits a grinning Devil, playing a fiddle and spreading his webbed wings over the idol's head, while from under one wing Death, a skeleton, peers out; he holds a javelin poised to strike and a cup of poison inscribed 'Jaffa' [see British Museum Satires No. 10063]. The shoulders are covered by drapery, drawn aside to reveal (rotten) ribs and a torn and bleeding heart which is transfixed by a dagger and a barbed spear. A scroll floats from the dagger inscribed 'Wilsons Narrative'; the spear has a scroll inscribed 'British Press' and is surmounted by a cap of Liberty. Fragments torn from the heart are inscribed 'Acre' [see British Museum Satires No. 9412], 'Egypt' [see British Museum Satires No. 9250, &c], and 'Irel[and]', while in the middle of the heart is a triangular patch: 'England'. - "Napoleon bestraddles the globe, seated at the Pole, about half of it being between his legs; countries are marked, but without regard to geography. A little figure looks from behind the globe (right) below the conqueror's left toe; his left hand is placed on 'Old England', and he raises a sabre menacingly. Napoleon, a fine figure, wearing an enormous cocked hat, a sabre in his right hand, looks down at the little man, his left arm extended; he says: "Ah, who is it dares interupt me in my Progress." The little fellow answers: "Why 'tis I little Johnny Bull Protecting a little spot I clap my hand on, and d-n. me if you come any Farther that's all." He is a 'cit' with an ill-fitting wig. 'France' lies between 'Switzerland', on which Napoleon's right foot rests, and 'Itali' [north of 'England'], on which is his left leg."--British Museum online catalogue

- "Three volunteers or militiamen, three-quarter length figures, exult at the head of Bonaparte which one of them (right) holds up on a pitchfork, saying, "Here he is Exalted my Lads 24 Hours after Landing." The head is in profile to the left, the sharp well-cut features contrast with those of the chubby yokels. The centre figure, holding out his hat, says, turning to the left: "Why Harkee, d'ye zee, I never liked Soldiering afore, but some how or other when I though [sic] of our Sal the bearns, the poor pigs, the Cows and the Geese, why I could have killed the whole Army my own Self." He wears a smock with the crossed straps of a cartouche-box. The third man (left) in regimentals, but round-shouldered and unsoldierly, says: "Dang my Buttons if that beant the Head of that Rogue Boney - I told our Squire this Morning, what do you think say's I the Lads of our Village can't cut up a Regiment of them French Mounsheers, and as soon as the Lasses had given us a Kiss for good luck I could have sworn we should do it and so we have." All three have hats turned up with favours and oak-twigs, the favours being inscribed respectively (left to right): 'Hearts of Oak'; 'Britons never will be Slaves', and 'We'll fight and We'll Conquer again and again'. In the spaces between these foreground figures is seen a distant encounter between English horse and foot and French invaders, who are being driven into the sea, on which are flat-bottomed boats, all on a very small scale. Two women search French corpses; one says: "why this is poor finding I have emtied the pocketts of a score and only found one head of garlic 9 onions & a parcel of pill Boxes." Cf. - Abstract:
- "Addington and Napoleon face each other defiantly across a narrow channel. Addington, the nearer, is the larger, and much the taller. He wears regimentals, cocked hat, and shapeless boots; he stands with arms akimbo, sabre in his hand; from each pocket projects a medicine-bottle, one labelled 'Composing Draft', the other 'Stimulating Draft'. He looks at Napoleon with a chop-fallen stare, saying, "who's afraid? damme? - \ O Lord. O Lord - what a Firey Fellow he is! \ - Who's afraid? damme? \ O dear! what will become of ye Roast Beef? \ damme! who's afraid? \ O dear! O dear." (The lines are alternately in large and tiny letters to distinguish between words spoken aloud and to himself.) He straddles across a steaming sirloin on a dish inscribed: 'O the Roast Beef of Old England'. Napoleon, who straddles even more widely, holds the hilt of his sabre; his head is large, his cocked hat grotesquely huge. He glares at the beef, saying, "Ah! ha, sacrè dieu! vat do I see yonder? \ Dat look so invitinly Red & de Vite? - \ Oh by Gar! I see 'tis de Roast Beef of Londres \ Vich I vill chop up, at von letel bite!" (Cf. BMSat 5790.) Behind Addington is the front bench in the House of Commons. Hawkesbury, thin, stooping, and melancholy, his hands on his hips, his arms curiously twisted, says: "Ah who's afraid now of Marching to Paris? ah who's afraid now." - "The interior of a carcass-butcher's slaughter-house, the carcasses of animals suspended from the wall. Through the doorway (l.) is seen a rock rising from the sea on which stands a bellowing bull; at the base of the rock is a British fleet. Napoleon, the butcher, with cleaver and knife, makes frantic efforts to reach the (distant) bull, but is restrained by Talleyrand who holds him round the waist. He wears top-boots, one inscribed '7 Leagues', with apron, and rolled-up shirt-sleeves, showing 'R T' [? 'Returned Transport'] branded on his left. arm. On one flap of Talleyrand's oddly shaped cocked hat is a cross, to indicate the ci-devant Bishop of Autun. The head of the Russian bear looks in at the door, gazing menacingly at Napoleon. In the foreground lies a bulky body from which head, hands, and feet have been chopped; to it is skewered a paper: 'Germanic Body'; the severed r. hand lies on a paper inscribed 'Hanover'. On the extreme left. is a round wicker cage surmounted by the Papal tiara, inscribed: 'From Rome and Not worth Killing'; it contains a fox and other small animals. On the extreme right. is a dog-kennel inscribed 'Prussia' and 'Put up to Fatten'; from it a lean greyhound on a short chain puts out its head to lap greedily at a trough of 'Consular Whipt Syllabub'. Behind this is the butcher's block, on which lies a cleaver; blood drips from it into a receptacle inscribed 'Treasury'. Behind Napoleon, in a trough inscribed 'Jaffa Cross Breed', are the bodies of six turbaned Moslems; blood gushes from the trough into a tank inscribed 'Glory'. On the wall hang carcasses, &c. (l. to r.): a ram ticketed 'True Spanish - Fleec'd'; a bleeding calf's head, a simian creature with a tail labelled 'Native Breed'; an ass, ticketed 'From Switzerland', a bloated pig 'From Holland'. Below the title: 'New Style - No Quarter Day!' The verses are a dialogue between 'Boney and Talley' on the possibilities of plunder and conquest.
