"A fat doctor is trundled down a hill in a wheelbarrow by a lean and amused countryman. His fat wife walks beside the barrow, holding his wig, hat, and stick, and angrily threatens him with her fist, while a dog runs in front. They have just left a thatched and gabled inn (left), with a sign, 'The Horns', and a placard over the door: 'Real Yorkshire Stingo Wines Cordials'. Jovial village notables sit outside the door, drinking and smoking; two, much amused, stand to watch the departure. "Two timorous duellists face each other at close quarters in a saw-pit, trembling and dropping their weapons, namely pistol and blunderbuss; each has a heap of weapons at his feet: sabres, rapier, pistol, more blunderbusses. The hair of both rises on their heads. One (left) is in uniform, the other (right), who is smaller, wears fashionable civilian dress with tasselled Hessian boots. A scroll extends above their heads inscribed: 'Did you mean to Offend me? indeed Sir not I.--indeed Sir I'm very glad on't!!!' A spectator (right) looks over the edge of the pit, holding a bowl from which he blows soap bubbles, which float over the head of the civilian. The bubble in the pipe is inscribed 'Puff', suggesting a publicity campaign."--British Museum online catalogue

One foot is on the gunwale, and her pose, looking up and to the left, travesties the lines below the title: "The Maiden paus'd, as if again, She thought to catch the distant strain, With head uprais'd and look intent, And eye and ear attentive bent, And locks flung back, and lips apart, Like monument of Grecian art" 'Walter Scott's Poem'. A bottle inscribed 'Mack . . .' and a short clay pipe project from a pocket. In the background (right) is a man in a similar boat with a basket of fish.
