"Stoddart sits in the centre of the design blowing through a trumpet a blast of abuse towards the newly-arrived Queen (left) while holding out copies of his newspaper towards four ragged little newsboys (right), who also blow their horns with great vigour. Queen Caroline, tall, dignified, and demurely dressed in black, flinches from Stoddart's blast, and is protected by Britannia and Alderman Wood. She says: "Surely thos Fellows will not be suffered to Insult me in this manner? who is it that Sets them on? who encourages them." Britannia, seated on a very angry Lion, extends her arms, saying: "Welcome Beloved of thy People, the Mother of Englands lost -- & ever to be lamented Hope, will ever be dear to the Hearts of every true born Englishman." Wood, wearing an Alderman's gown, tries to protect her with a shield inscribed: 'No more Douglas's an Englishman's Rights, Justice & Truth'. From Stoddart's trumpet issue the words: 'Treason, Crim Con, no Rights, no Claims, no pretensions, no Prerogatives, no Patronage, no Property, no Soul to be Prayed for, no Justice, no Law, no Protection, Woe to them that espouse her Cause, Woe to them that Speak well of her!!!' At his feet lie newspapers: 'New Times', 'Morning Post', 'Courier'. Castlereagh and Sidmouth (right), who extend admonitory fingers, urge him on: the former says: "hit hard--dont spare now Dr Slop here is a fine Oppertunity for you to indulge your Spleen." Sidmouth, larger than life and shockingly malevolent, says: "Blow away my boys, spread it far and near, lay it on thick, do not stand for Trifles!!!" The biggest newsboy has a bill headed 'New Times' in his hat; another holds a bundle of the 'Courier', 'New Times', and '[Morning] Post'. A third has 'News' in his hat. Behind and between Stoddart and Castlereagh a man capers in ecstasy, waving a hat in which is a paper: 'Pardon for Edwards'. "Seven Aldermen, with ass's ears, sit in conference (a meeting of the Court of Aldermen) in Guildhall wearing their furred gowns. The table is covered with a cloth on which are the City Arms and motto, 'Domine Direge [sic] Nos', but a turtle replaces the griffin as the sinister supporter. The arcaded wall, showing the lower part of the windows (with the City Arms), forms a background. The table is flanked by the statues of the giants, 'Gog' (left) and 'Magog' (right), on pedestals. The former, holding a staff with a spiked ball dangling from it, asks: "I say Brother what do you think of our City Asses." Magog, holding pike and shield: "Why I think Brother Gog they are a set of D--n'd Stupid Blockheads." Five Aldermen are on the farther side of the table. The other two sit facing each other at the opposite ends. In the centre sits Bridges; he says: "As late Mare I should be a Great Ass if I did not differ from those Radical Individuals who trust in their own confidence-- I say the Q--n must not go to St Pauls." On his right is Curtis, the largest and most prominent, who says with raised forefinger: "We shall have a speedy Revolution and soon [see British Museum Satires No. 11306], if she is allowed to come into the City-- I protest on my part against prayers of any description." The man at the head of the table says: "No Prayers by St Paul I say for one." The Alderman next him asks: "Where is our friend At--ns, he knows all about burning the Thames" [see British Museum Satires No. 13272]. The others (left to right) says: [1] "Let me see--Keep her out by all means." He stares through an eye-glass, shutting one eye. [2] "Oh dear we shall all be ruined if she comes." "A sequel to British Museum Satires No. 13895. The Queen has reached the top of the column; she is blindfolded and wears a fool's cap; but the column is shattered by the radicals, and she falls backwards, dropping sceptre and firebrand. The pedestal tilts, the column is broken in three, and the summit is being hauled down by a rope tugged at by a cheering mob of radicals with pikes. Flames and towering clouds of smoke ascend from a large fire at its base, on which a Bible inscribed 'I H S' and books of 'Laws' and 'Religion' are burning. The Black Dwarf (Wooler, see British Museum Satires No. 12988), kneeling, blows it with bellows. Crown, Bible, and cushion fall from the column. Hunt cheers the catastrophe, waving his cap, as do others. There is a tricolour banner topped by a skull and inscribed 'Blood & Plunder'. Cobbett (?) is now on the top of the Queen's ladder, with (?) "Heading to a printed broadside. The King, on a dais, sits at a table between Eldon and Castlereagh, with Liverpool (?) under the table (from fear). All are terrified at the Bill, a creature, surrounded by clouds, with stick-like limbs, supported on broken crutches and a body formed of a rolled document: 'Bill of Pains and Penalties'. The apparition interrupts a Cabinet meeting, only three Ministers are depicted, others being mentioned; the King departs to Windsor to escape the Ghost, which has addressed them. The thirteenth and sixteenth of nineteen verses: Two crutches supported its figure so drear, Two props almost broken in pieces; And as the wan spectre advanced to them near, They saw one inscribed "Ministerial fear," On the other was, "Royal Caprices." "A sequence of six designs in two rows. [1] 'Begging before the Door of his Benefactor.' Young Leach, as a crossing-sweeper, holds out his hat to a gentleman who amiably puts in a coin. The latter walks away from a street-door with a plate inscribed 'Sir Robt Taylor'. [2] 'In the Service of his Benefactor.' Leach, as a young footman in livery, walks behind Taylor and his wife, who are returning from a country church. He carries cane and prayer-book. [3] 'As Clerk to his Benefactor.' Leach writes at a desk in a bare room, with a shelf of books high on the wall. [4] 'Now a Lawyer!!!' He sits in a well-furnished room, smilingly giving advice to a dismayed client (cf. British Museum Satires No. 11931, &c.). [5] 'Becomes a Counsellor!!! Thanks to his Benefactor.' Scene in court, with a crowded gallery. As one of a row of barristers Leach makes an impassioned appeal to the judge. [6] 'And now a Judge!!! Thanks to the Nation.' From the bench he looks down at a row of barristers. After the title: 'Every Merit should be Awarded to a Man for having raised himself from Beggary to so prominent a Station. "Heading to a printed broadside. An enormous leech with the head and wig of Sir John Leach (see British Museum Satires No. 13740) advances menacingly upon three little men (right) who flee. Three others (left) register disgust, holding their noses. They say: "Tom T--dman's cart is nothing to compare to it; It stinks worse than a Pole-cat; D--n it what a Stench." A woman staggers backwards, saying: "Bring me a Smelling Bottle or I shall Die." One man lies on the ground fainting or dead. The leech is backed by clouds of smoke. Below the title: "The common damn'd shun its society, and think themselves fiends less foul." The text describes 'the Great Black Leech lately discovered at Milan . . .' procured 'at a great expense, at the special instance of the State "Doctor" [Sidmouth], . . . for 'the performance of an operation to relieve the Great Man's complaint' (a troubled mind).
