Men, horses, and (mongrel) dogs in wild but spirited confusion in a forest glade pursue a cow (left); the stag is in the background running in the opposite direction, followed by one man on foot. One horse and rider struggle in a ditch while a second horse, which has kicked off its rider, leaps on top of them. A bald John Gilpin clasps his mount round the neck. In the foreground four men over-weight a two-wheeled cart drawn by a wretched but galloping jade. See British Museum catalogue

An expensively decorated room with a gas chandelier of cut glass is filled with a raffish crowd, eating, drinking, and fighting, and flirting. The selling of shell-fish is a 'specious pretence' for 'costly suppers' in a 'den of depravity'. The center figure, a young man assailed by a woman, appears to be Robert Cruikshank. A scene in the Abbey Cloisters. Westminster schoolboys in cap and gown terrify a poor woman and a watchman by turnip-headed ghosts, and by one of their number on stilts who is masked and smoking a flaming pipe. Another, seated on a lamp-bracket, discharges a squirt at the frightened woman who falls, clutching at the fleeing watchman. See British Museum catalogue
