Abstract:
"[1] 'H. Bunbury Esqr del.' Punch (left) points to a large butt or tun inscribed 'WYNNSTAY', from the top of which hang comic masks which encircle its upper circumference; in his right hand is a stick with an ass's head. On the right side of the butt are three figures: Mother Shipton, humpbacked with a profile like Punch's; a demon or satyr, who looks from behind the cask; and a small man or boy, perhaps Tom Thumb. [2] 'View of the Theatre at Wynnstay. I. Evans Esqr del.' A view of the theatre is framed by a curtain held up (left) by Comedy and right by Tragedy. The façade has the date '1782'. [3] 'Wynnstay. H. Bunbury Esqr del.' Amateur actors and actresses dance in a circle round a high pedestal supporting a bust of (?) Shakespeare. They include a Falstaff leering at a lady in Elizabethan dress, a man wearing a tall leek in his hat (? On the right, a hatched-faced woman, in a Duchess of Devonshire hat and costume, sits in front of a harpsichord with a sheet of music entitled "Time has not thinned my flowing hair." On her lap is a book labelled Werter (Goethe's Sorrows of Young Werther). Behind her on the wall between two framed paintins is a round clock carved with the motif of Father Time and his scythe. On the left a very bored looking young man slouches in his chair. Out of his pocket sticks a paper on which is written "Ye gods ye gave to me a wife." On the floor in front of the woman lies a book entitled "Loves labour lost by Shakes (i.e. William Shakespeare's Loves labour lost)."

"A jovial and enormously stout man sits on a chair holding a large frothing jug in his right hand, a pipe in his left. Behind him are trees. His contour resembles that of a Toby jug. Beneath the design are verses beginning: 'Dear Tom this brown Jug that now foams with mild Ale (In which I will drink to sweet Nan of the Vale) was once Toby Fillpot, a thirsty old Soul ...' "Johnson (left) sits at a small rectangular breakfast-table with his back to the door. A nursemaid behind him holds the infant Veronica, who leans forward, pushing Johnson's wig from his head; he holds up his finger admonishingly and does not appear pleased, though all the others smile admiringly. These are: Mrs. Boswell, seated (right) opposite Johnson; Boswell standing beside Johnson and clasping his hands over 'Ogden' (cf. BMSat 7031); the two visitors, Mr. Scott and Sir William Forbes; the tousled foot-boy, who carries in a tray of tea-things which he is about to place beside the urn on the otherwise bare table.
