One (l.) says: "Why Jack! you was so long in a French Prison, I suppose you larnt to patter their Lingo a little." "John Bull, as a burly and ugly sailor, sits enthroned (right), listening to Melville's plea of innocence. Melville, in Highland dress, and wearing a feathered bonnet, stands in profile to the right. with clasped hands and flexed knees; he says: "Indeed Mr Bull - I knaw nae more aboot it - than Johnny Groat o'the Highlands." Trotter lurks behind him (left) furtively twitching his superior's kilt, and jerking his thumb to the left.; he says: "Take my advice - and let us Trot off while we are well, he looks confounded inquisitive." John scowls and glares pugnaciously, saying, "Why Look ye - de ye see - I dont come for to go for to say - exactly, that you sack'd the cole - all I say is the Shiners set sail - and as you had the care of the Hatches - it is, likely, you should know what Port they steer'd into! I say let's look at your log book Old one." He wears striped trousers and a knotted scarf; in his hat is a tobacco-pipe. Abstract:
"A handsome young military officer, seated in an armchair, drinks wine with two Jewish money-lenders, who sit facing him across a round table. He listens with a reckless smile to one of the Jews; the other peers through spectacles at 'Title Deeds'. The Jews are old, thin, and bearded, but one wears a bag-wig. On the ground by the latter (r.) is a paper: 'Money Lent on good Securities. Annuities Jointers [sic] bought and Sold.' By the spendthrift's chair lies a greyhound. The background is a wall closely covered with pictures in ornate frames, which combine to tell the young man's story. Above his head is a 'Prodigal Son' kneeling among the swine; above this a reclining Venus is partly visible, and below, 'Diane', a horse and foal. Gamesters at a 'Hazard Table' hangs above 'Sir Matthew Mite', a miser with money-bags, weighing coin in sacks. Below this is a bust portrait of 'Sir Peter Plumb' in a tie-wig. A bust portrait of a scraggy woman wearing jewels is 'Lady Crane'. Below this is a picture of a fighting-cock, the frame decorated by a baron's coronet. "Two sailors inside the Victory, discussing the fate of Nelson's body; one stands at left, weeping, his hat in his hand, saying, 'Do you know Jack they say as how they mean to put his Honors remains into another ship--- Now I think it d-d hard that as he kept us while he was alive - that we should not be allow'd to keep him now he is dead'. The other sailor sits at right with his arm on Nelson's coffin, which is on a bier under a window, a sailor's hat with a ribbon lettered 'Victory' on top of it; the sitting sailor holds up a cutlass and replies, 'Make yourself easy about that Ben--- here am I watch over the coffin, and depend upon it he never stirs from the Victory, till he arrives in his native country, where there will be plenty to revere, and guard his precious memory, for his monument will be erected in the heart of every Briton.'
