There is a realistic landscape background with a substantial village inn in the distance (right). The text relates how a beloved publican kept a humble little ale-house, the sign of the Goose. A rival built a larger house with 'three rooms . . . drinking glasses instead of horns', intending to monopolize custom, with the sign, a fox running off with a goose. Two farmers then enabled the keeper of 'the Goose' 'to out-top his rival in a house and furniture', with a sign of his own device, the Goose running away with the Fox."--British Museum online catalogue
