"A provincial evening party; all the guests are elderly, plain, and unfashionable. Those in the foreground sit in an irregular semicircle. Three men laugh together on the left, one makes a gesture which jerks a woman's tea-cup from her hand; she scowls at him with fury. The scalding tea pours over the leg of her neighbour on the right who flourishes his cane, knocking off the wig of a man who stands behind. This man throws up his arms, his cup and saucer fly into the air, the tea pouring on to the head of the man with the cane. The man losing his wig is struck in the face by a spurt of tea from the mouth of a man on the right, trying to restrain his laughter at the sequence of accidents, and unaware that his own skimpy pigtail is burning in a candle. "One of a set of prints on the marriage of the Prince of Wales, see BMSat 6924, &c. Mrs. Fitzherbert (left) and the Prince of Wales dance; she holds out her apron in her right hand, his left arm is raised as if dancing a Scots reel; he appears about to take her left hand. The musicians are Burke, Weltje, and Hanger: Weltje, wearing a hat, sits (left) on a low stool, beating a pistol upon a warming-pan which he holds between his knees. Burke stands behind him holding a gridiron in the manner of a violin and with a pair of tongs as bow. He says, "Oh Burn the Pan it is not Beautifull". Weltje answers, "Damme but 'tis Sublime" (one of many allusions to Burke's book). George Hanger stands (right) beating the heavy end of his bludgeon on a salt-box; he is stamping and dancing, his hat is on the ground at his feet. Through an aperture in the wall behind his head is seen an ornate bed, decorated with triple ostrich plumes; behind the pillows is a cross. Two pictures, both inscribed 'Hamlet', are on the wall: on the left the Lord Chamberlain with his wand (Lord Salisbury as Polonius) approaches George III, saying, "I will be brief your noble son is mad". On the right Laertes addresses Ophelia, saying: "He may not as inferior persons do carve for himself for on his choice depends the sanity [sic] & health of the whole state." On the floor, in the foreground, lie two books and a paper inscribed respectively, 'Bold Stroke for a Wife' [Mrs. Centlivre]; 'Clandestine Marriage' [Colman and Garrick]; and 'I'll have a Wife of my own'. Beneath the title is engraved, 'As performed at the Theatre Royal, C------n [Carlton] House for the Benifit of the Widow Wadman'. "The Prince of Orange (left), dressed like a Dutchman in (English) caricature, kneels with arms extended imploringly at the feet of Princess Charlotte (a good portrait). He wears Apollo's wreath, decorated with small oranges, before him is his clumsy flower-pot hat, containing a paper: 'Rules for the game of ye Dutch Pins' (ninepins); beside this is a Jews' harp, a degraded form of Apollo's lyre. His breeches are enormously bulky, and a tobacco-pipe projects from a pocket. He sings: "Lovely Maid, assuage my Anguish! At your feet your true love sighs; Do not let your Dutchman languish, If you frown, alas he dies!" She answers, pointing to his breeches: "From what I feel, and what I see, There's nought about you that bewitches; Unless indeed a charm may be In a Dutchman's great big breeches!!!" She stands beside a table (right) at which she has been sitting. On this are her painting materials, pencil, brushes, cakes of water-colour, porcelain palette, and jar of water, with an open box. Her painting is on a sloping board: a fat Dutchman trudges off, a bundle at his back, in the direction of a sign-post pointing 'To Holland'; he grasps his head despairingly. Behind the Prince a French window with draped curtains gives on to a small balcony. "The fat and florid Lady Buckinghamshire, seated at the head of her faro-table, throws up her arms in dismay, turning towards her husband, who enters through a door (left), saying, "The Bank's stole! - we're ruin'd my Lady! - but I'll run to Bow Street & fix the Saddle upon the right horse, my Lady!" She exclaims: "The Bank stole, my Lord? - why I secur'd it in the Housekeepers-room myself! - this comes of admitting Jacobins into the house! - Ah! the Cheats! Seven Hundred gone smack; - without a single Cock of the Cards!" She fills the centre of the design, and is much larger than her husband. Her guests are crowded together on the right. A pretty young woman, Mrs. Concannon, seated on her left, clasps her hands, exclaiming, "Bank stole! - why I had a Gold snuffbox stole last night from my Table in Grafton Street." Lady Archer, on the extreme right, on the nearer side of the table, turns a corvine and angry profile towards Lord Buckinghamshire, saying, "Stole! - bless me why a Lady had her Pocket pick'd at my House last Monday." Opposite her sits Fox, wearing a hat and putting his hand over his mouth, saying, "Zounds! I hope they dont Smoke me." Sheridan looks over his shoulder, saying, "nor me". Behind Fox, Hanger stands in profile to the left, wearing a hat and holding his bludgeon; he says: "O! if they come to the Mount, if I don't tip them Shelalee" (see BMSat 8889). ...
