"Fox and his wife, facing the spectator, sleep in a magnificent , ducal bed, whose head and curtains form a background to the design. They disturbed by nightmares. Fox extends both arms in gloomy terror as Naooleon springs on his bed (r.) and seizes the collar of his night-shirt, the other side of which is tugged at by the ghost of Pitt (l.) who floats towards him dressed in a shroud, and supporting the curtain with his left. arm. Pitt exclaims: "Awake, arise, or be for ever fall'n!" Fox's head is jerked forward, his hair rises, and his (bonnet-rouge) night-cap falls off. Napoleon leaps from a cannon on which his left. toe rests. It is inscribed 'Pour Subjuguer le Monde' [cf. BMSat 10599, &c.]. Behind it, and forming a background to the right. of the design, are clouds of fiery smoke, from which emerge a forest of spears with an imperial eagle topping a banner inscribed: 'Horrors of Invasion'. Napoleon wears his feathered bicorne with spurred jack-boots and raises his sword fiercely. An eagle whose (tricolour) collar is inscribed 'Prussia hovers menacingly over Fox'. The fringed bed-cover is covered with a pattern of roses; from under it (l.) project heavy jagged thorn-branches with a few roses; the branches are inscribed: 'India Roses', 'Emancipation Roses', 'French Roses', 'Coalition Roses', 'Volunteer Roses'. A ghastly creature, Death, crawls from under the coverlet, which rests on the carpeted floor: a grinning skull-like jaw appears; a corpse-like arm holds up an hour-glass whose sands are almost run out. Round the arm is twined a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Intemperance', 'Drosy [sic]', 'Dissolution'; its r. hand clutches a spear. A bull-dog, its collar inscribed 'John Bull', snarls savagely at Napoleon, resting its fore-paws on the foot of the bed: it befouls a paper: 'List of the N[ew] Broad-Bottom Administr[ation] [cf. BMSat 10530], 'Citizen Volp[one]' [cf. BMSat 9892, &c], 'Lord Pogy' [Grenville's nickname] ' - Bett Armstead' [Mrs. Fox], 'Doctor Clysterpipe' [Sidmouth, cf. BMSat 9849], 'Miss Petty' [Lord H. Petty]. On the head of the bed are the arms of the Duke of Bedford, with his motto, 'Che Sara Sara' (Mr. and Mrs. Fox were in Bedford's house in Arlington Street). "Napoleon, enthroned, receives the obeisance of Fox and his party. The centre figure is the enormous Mrs. Fox, burlesqued, and full face, who curtsies, fan in hand; her coarse features and patched face indicate Gillray's view of her antecedents, cf. BMSats 5352, 5587, 10589. On her right and next Bonaparte, O'Connor bends forward, chapeau-bras; from his pocket projects a pamphlet: 'Trial of O'Conner at Maid[stone]'. Opposite Bonaparte, and on his wife's left, Fox much caricatured, and with gouty swollen legs, makes a low bow, right hand on his breast, hat held out. He wears court dress with a sword. From his pocket issues a document: 'Original Jacobin Manuscripts'. Behind him Erskine, tall and self-important in barrister's wig and gown, bows with a complacent smile, holding out a brief bag in his left hand. Behind him Lord and Lady Holland (who is meretricious-looking) are bowing. In the foreground and on Fox's left, Robert Adair, much emaciated, grovels on the floor, his head between his arms which are extended along the carpet, in a gesture of abject homage. From his coat pockets project 'Revolutionary Odes, by Citizen Bow-ba-dara' and 'Intelligence for the Morning Chronicle.' Napoleon, very thin, sits on a canopied throne whose arms terminate in globes covered with maps of the world, each supported on the shoulders of a naked manikin. On one globe the Consul rests his right hand, clutching it with long predatory fingers; the left hand is extended towards Fox. He wears military uniform, with a huge plumed cocked hat, and (like Fox) a black bag attached to his coat collar, below his cropped hair. His throne is on a circular dais, covered with a fringed carpet, with a tasselled cushion for his feet. Behind it is a carved irradiated sun, reminiscent of Louis XIV, le Roi Soleil, but with eyes which look down in surprise at the First Consul. On each side of the throne fierce Mamelukes stand at attention, holding sabres, and with pistols in their belts."--British Museum online catalogue

"A reception given by Mr. and Mrs. Fox to various groups of the Opposition, [With one or two exceptions the identifications are those of Miss Banks; the characterization is excellent, and most are unmistakeable.] in which the arrangement has political and social significance. Three Grenvilles bow to the host and hostess; the Marquis of Buckingham, wearing his ribbon, holding hat and gold-headed cane and showing a gouty leg and foot, bends low. Next is Lord Grenville, clasping his hat to his breast, more ingratiating but less obsequious than his brother. Next is the stout Lord Temple, awkwardly imitating his uncle's gesture. Fox, wearing a sword, returns Buckingham's bow, his hand on his heart; on his right. stands the fat Mrs. Fox, curtseying, and ogling Grenville. She holds a fan on which is a profile portrait of 'Napoleone Ist'; from her pocket projects a flask of 'French Brandy', indicative of her antecedents (cf. BMSats 7370, 10589) as well as her sympathies, cf. BMSat 9892). On the extreme right. is the Prince of Wales, in back view, the greater part of his figure cut off by the margin, but unmistakable. From his pocket projects a paper: 'Henry IV. Sc. I [sic] Pr of W -l know you all, & shall . . . while.' A short fat man gazes up at him admiringly, obsequiously amused; he is identified by Miss Banks as 'Mr [i.e. General] Fitzpatrick', but resembles M. A. Taylor. Beside him is a dog, his collar inscribed 'Tommy Tattle' [? Thomas Tyrwhitt]. Mrs. Fitzherbert sits, in semi-state, in the corner of a sofa, holding a fan on which are the Prince's feathers and 'Ich Dien'; she is about to take a ticket, 'Coalition Masquerade', proffered with ingratiating vivacity by Lord Carlisle. Next Carlisle behind the sofa stands the Duke of Clarence, facing the Prince, and cruelly caricatured. Mrs. Jordan takes his right. arm, but is reading Jobson & Nell [characters in 'The Devil to pay] with the Farce of Equality' [see BMSat 7908, &c.]. Behind the pair are Col. McMahon, sly and furtive, and a large man, resembling the Duke of York. [Identified by Miss Banks as 'Mr. Tyrwitt', but Tommy Tyrwhitt was noted for his small size. ] Behind Mrs. Fitzherbert, Erskine, in wig and gown, delightedly holds up a large paper (the words partly obscured): 'Arraignments for the new Broad-Bottom'd Administration [cf. "Ghosts (right) stand in a row at the foot of Fox's bed; he sits up, staring in terror, hands raised, large tears on his cheeks. The ghosts emerge from clouds; they are headless, with bloodstained necks round which are nooses, except for Lord Edward Fitzgerald, who stands above the others, in profile to the left, with blood-stained hair and shirt. His right hand is on his breast and he says: "" Who first sedue'd my youthful Mind from Virtue? - "Who plann'd my Treasons, & who caus'd my Death? - "Remember poor Lord Edward, and despair!!! - " Fox says: ""Why do'st thou shake thy, Goary Locks at me? "Dear, bravest, worthiest, noblest, best of Men! "Thou can'st not say, I did it! - " The body on Lord Edward's right and on the extreme right is that of Grogan, a leader of rebels in Wexford, it was said under compulsion, hanged from Wexford Bridge, his head fixed on a pike. Lecky, 'Hist. of England', 1890, viii. 95, 166-7. On Lord Edward's left is a body, the label from the neck inscribed 'Remember Hervay'. (Bagenal Harvey, commander-in-chief in Wexford (ibid. viii. 91), executed with Grogan.) Next is 'Quigley' (or O'Coigley), see BMSat 9189, executed 7 June 1798 at Maidstone. Next, a label, 'Shears's', rises from clouds in which the bodies are concealed. (John and Henry Sheares, elected to the Directory in Dublin on the arrest of Bond and others, were arrested 21 May and executed on 14 July 1798. Lord Edward died of the wounds received when he resisted arrest, see 'Auckland Corr.' iv. 414 ff., 442-4.) Above Fox's head fly two naked creatures with infantine bodies, webbed wings, and the serpents of faction or discord springing from their heads and writhing round their bodies. They hold up between them a paper inscribed 'Confessions \ of O'Conner \ Ol Bond'. The bed is framed in heavy curtains. Mrs. Fox lies asleep with her back to Fox. Abstract:
"Notorious rakes and gamblers ride or run furiously towards rays descending from a sun in the upper left corner of the design inscribed 'Chance'; its centre, a segment of which is visible, is composed of the letters on an 'E.O.' (roulette) table (cf. British Museum Satires No. 5928). The foremost pair are the Duke of Clarence and the Prince of Wales; the Duke, slightly ahead, wears a chamber-pot on his head marked with an anchor (cf. British Museum Satires No. 7909) and sits behind Mrs. Jordan, who cries, "Push away! that's your sort!" He cries, "Straight Sailing! that's your sort!" Both the horses have human heads; that of the Duke says, "I'm the Sort for Leading; that of the Prince is Fox." The Prince's hat with feathers and the motto 'Ich dien' flies from his head, two women sit behind him; the one holding his waist (? Mrs. Crouch) says, "No Jealous Fitz - that's your sort!" The other, seated behind her, holds the end of the Prince's shirt, she has a large fox's brush and is probably Mrs. Armistead; she says, "Well done Charley! That's your sort!" The Prince says, "I'm the sort for a Widow - she's done over!" Mrs. Fitzherbert has fallen from the horse into a stream and holds out her arms towards the Prince. From the water emerges a post inscribed 'Styx', a bridge or culvert beside it is 'Hazard'. Behind this group the Duke of York runs forward, wearing a hat made of playing-cards surmounted by a teetotum inscribed 'ABC....' In his right hand he holds out a dice-box inscribed 'Oat - ' shaking from it two dice inscribed 'la' and 'nds' (he had recently bought Oatlands); in his left is a tennis racquet. He wears regimentals; the ribbon across his shoulder is formed of playing-cards; at his back is a knapsack full of 'Tennis Balls' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 7903) which resemble guineas. He says, "I'm the sort! for running out!" For his gaming see British Museum Satires No. 7301 (5), &c. Just behind him ride three bloods with cropped hair, wearing the high hats, long breeches, and coats with shawl collars hanging away from the neck which such young men affected (see British Museum Satires No. 8040, &c). The one nearest the spectator rides a horse with a bandage over his eyes inscribed 'Lottery Hack'; he looks up, regardless of the fact that he is riding into a pit, and points with his long whip to a castle resting on clouds inscribed 'Illegal Insurance' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 7750); he says, "That's your sort - I'm in for it - I shall do the deep Ones!" The other two shout, "Go it! Dam'me! that 's your sort!" and "Dam Trade! Life and a Racer! that 's your sort." Behind this group is a couple on a galloping horse: a stout jovial woman wearing breeches rides astride, waving her whip, behind her sits an anxious-looking elderly citizen, wearing petticoats. He says, "We're the wrong side of Temple Bar, my dear, we are only the sort to be laughed at"; she answers, "Peace good Mr Jerry Candle-wick, its life! and Life and the Breeches! thats the sort." By their horse's head is a signpost inscribed 'Rotten Row', with a pointing hand inscribed 'Hoyle' (on Whist), the vertical post inscribed 'Crim. con.' The last rider is a stout woman, probably Mrs. Hobart (noted for her faro-table, see British Museum Satires No. 8167), on a rocking-horse inscribed 'Faro'; she carries on her arm a wicker cage containing pigeons and says, "Unplucked Pidgeons! that's the sort." In the foreground on the extreme right an elderly Jew sits on a bank watching the mad race with a smile; he says, "50 per Cent! dats de sort! if dey ride to de Devil, dey leave coot Security behind, Ah! Security! dot's de sort." Near him is a card house; at his feet is the Knave of Clubs. In the front of the design and near the Duke of York are other playing cards (left to right): four aces, the two of diamonds, King of Hearts, and (?) "Fox reclines in an armchair of Gothic shape, his vast swathed legs resting on a cushion, his head against a pillow. He wears a dressing-gown and night-cap. His friends and colleagues stand round him. On his right. is Mrs. Fitzherbert, a meretricious 'Abbess' (cf. BMSat 5181, &c), holding a rosary and placing her hand under his chin; her face and breasts are covered by a large veil of transparent black. On his left. stands a bishop in lawn sleeves and mitre, a rosary hanging from his waist; he puts one hand on Fox's arm, and raises the other in admonition, saying, "O Tempora, O Mores! - Charley! dear Charley! - remember your poor Soul! - & if you're spared this time give us Emancipation - or!!!" His head is concealed, but he is identified by Lord Holland as O'Beirne, Bishop of Meath, educated as a Catholic, and a Whig pamphleteer. Mrs. Fitzherbert says: "Do confess your Sins Charley! do take Advice from an Old Abbess [cf. BMSat 10404] & receive Absolution! - here is Bishop O'Bother, 'twill be quite snug among Friends you know!" Fox says: "I abhor all Communion which debars us the comfort of the Cup! - will no one give me a Cordial?" Facing Fox, and in back view, stands the Prince, holding a handkerchief to his face; he says: "Alas! poor Charley! - do give him a Brimmer of Sack, 'twill do him more good Abbess, than all the Bishop's nostrums!" In his left hand he holds his cocked hat; in a coat-tail pocket is a pamphlet: 'Letter from N. Jeffreys'. Sheridan on the extreme right., furtive and bloated, puts his hand on the bishop's shoulder, saying, "Emancipation! - fudge! - why Dr OBother I thought you knew better!" In his pocket is a paper: 'Scheme for a new Administra[tion]'. Behind him stands Howick, in the extremity of grief, throwing back his head, and holding his handkerchief to his face. Three men stand, on the Prince's l., looking towards Fox, all weeping with raised handkerchiefs. Their heads rise one above and behind the other from the short Petty who wears a laced coat and bag-wig and has a large roll under his arm: 'New Taxes for 1806'. He says "Ah poor me! - If my Dancing-Days are over!" Windham says: "O Lord! what side can I tack round to Now!" The tall Moira says: "I must get back to Ballynahinch! Och! Och." [The allusion is to Moira's Irish estate and to Canning's verses, 'Ballynahinch' in the 'Anti-Jacobin', 9 July 1798, cf. BMSat 9235.] The three '(Ministerial) Grenvilles stand in the doorway (l.) apart from the mourners. Lord Grenville turns to Sidmouth, who is just within the room, putting a hand on his arm, and saying, "Well Doctor, have you done his business? - shall we have the Coast clear, soon?" Sidmouth answers, with sly satisfaction, "We'll see!" He holds a bottle labelled 'Composing Draft' [cf. BMSat 9849]. The spectacled Marquis of Buckingham looks round to say "O! Such a Day as This! so renown'd so Victorious"; his son, Lord Temple, continues: "such a day as This! was never seen!" In the foreground (l.) the fat Mrs. Fox faints in a small ornate chair; under her chair is a square spirits-bottle of 'True Maidstone', with a broken glass beside it. Lord Derby, wearing top-boots, bends over her, holding a bottle to her nose. He says: "My dear old Flame Bet, dont despair! - if Charley is pop'd off - a'nt I left to Comfort you - ?" On a stool at Fox's r. hand is a urinal decorated with Britannia, standing on a scroll: 'Negotiations for Peace between Great Britain & France'. On the ground beside him are a broken dice-box and dice. Behind the back of Fox's chair heavy fringed curtains are festooned, giving an impression of ducal magnificence, the scene being the Duke of Bedford's house in Arlington Street (or Stable Yard, St. James's)."--British Museum online catalogue
