Heading to a printed broadside in support of Queen Caroline, with a depiction of the Queen in the upper left, riding in a chariot pulled by a lion under a banner reading "Innocence and Triumph." The Italian witnesses against her are being led in chains to the gallows, the man at the back of the line remaking "This is past a joke O! Majocc"; a hangman smoking a pipe awaits them at the top of a ladder, noose in hand. Three figures with bags over their heads are already hanging, with a fourth hanged figure being fed by a devil with a pitchfork into the flaming mouth of a demon on the right, a "Green Bag" falling into the flames next to him. Another victim is skewered by a second devil standing inside the demon's mouth; the words "Milan Commission Receiving Office" are written amid the flames. A John Bull figure with a walking stick watches the scene from the right, remarking: "Well now if this h'ant a sight that pleases John Bull - Go & be hang'd to ye you Italian scoundels - come to swear an innocent womans life away." "A tailor on his raised shop-board (right) kneels in terror at the apparition of an emaciated corpse-like man and a fat pig with its throat cut standing on its hind-legs. Beneath the shop-board the head and shoulders of the Devil emerge from the flames of Hell; he holds a trident and a bulky roll of cloth inscribed 'Cabbage' (cf. BMSat 8035, &c.), implying that the tailor's pilfering has not been restricted to scraps of material. (The place where tailors kept their 'cabbage' was termed Hell; see Grose, 'Classical Dict. of the Vulgar Tongue'). The tailor wears a nightcap and apron; round his neck is a tape-measure; he says (excreting), "o Lord o Lord I am in a nasty Condition". A small demon (right) holds his nose. Beside the tailor are his goose, lying on a garment (which is burning from the heat of the iron); the heel of a loaf with a knife, onions and cucumbers lie next a paper inscribed 'sick and in prison and he [word erased, comforted] me'. reside an ink-pot are an open book: 'The Benevolent Society Benifet of \ Survivership', and a paper: 'Advice to overseers respecting the poor'. The corpse stands in back view holding out a minatory hand and turning his nead in profile to the right; he asks "who starved me to Death". The pig says "you have been the Cause of my death". A man on the extreme left looks through a door, saying, "Aye Aye this comes of your ingratitude for my saving your life". On the wall which forms a background are (left to right) two pictures, two broadside ballads, and a print: [1] The lower part of a picture of 'Howard' shows the legs of a man walking past a barred prison window, through which look two faces. (News was received on 26 Feb. of the death of John Howard, the prison reformer, 'Gent. Mag.', 1790, i. 276, but this Howard appears to be the corpse.) [2] 'A Song by Tom Stitch on the Windsor Corporation'. [3] 'A Song in Ridicule of my best Friend.' [4] A print of a gibbet from which hangs a noose inscribed 'The Desert.' [5] A large picture: 'Windsor Charity'; the tailor stands in a prison cell, pointing to an emaciated man lying on straw, turning to a woman who kneels at his feet, he says, clenching his fist, "let him Die & be d--d." "Two-part satire on the resignation of Lord Bute, April 1763. On the left is a scene of execution, headed "Excise", with Bute, identified by his plaid waistcoat, hanging from an apple tree (referring to the Cider Bill), a devil sitting on the branch above him wears a large boot (a pun on Bute) on one leg, the other ending in a claw; two men below exult. In the centre a man (evidently another representation of Bute as he wears a large boot on one leg and on the other leg wears a garter lettered "Honi ..." as in the scene on the right) lies across a fire while another pumps a pair of bellows to fan the flames; three farmers standing behind the fire and another to the right rejoice at Bute's downfall. On the right, another devil reciting the proverb, "Harm watch, Harm catch", one leg ending in a hammer, sits on top of a gallows from which hangs a fox (Henry Fox) wighted down by money bags tied around his neck. On the right is a scene set in a grand interior, headed "Resignation, in which Princess Augusta sprawls weeping in a chair her breasts partly exposed while a devil delves into Bute's breeches as he drags him through a door through which flames and smoke can be seen, the Duke of Cumberland brandishes a sword in his right hand and pushes Bute with his left; he is encouraged by a nephew, Edward, Duke of York, at lower right, a lusty goat, one of whose hands is a claw, looks on with pleasure."--British Museum online catalogue
